The Narrator: DEATH

Since Death is the narrator, his main duty is to take away souls. He tends to mask these actions with the distraction of colors. Also, Death uses the colors to describe the events surrounding him.

Quote: "I do try to enjoy every color I see - the whole spectrum. A billion or so flavors, none of them quite the same, and a sky to slowly suck on. It takes the edge off the stress," (Zusak 4)

In The Book Thief, the color red symbolizes the violence, blood, danger, and the pity of significant events. More specifically, when speaking of the bombing, death speaks of a blood-red sky at the site. Also, red symbolizes the pity after Liesel loses her loved ones. Lastly, danger is represented through red, as it is shown on the nazi flag.

Quote: "The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places, it was burned. There was black crumbs, and pepper streaked across the redness... Then, bombs," (Zusak 12).

WHITE

Death also mentions the color white. White usually symbolizes the cold and snowy winters, the "coldness" of death, and purity. The color white represents the purity in Liesel's younger brother. White represents the sadness of death because of the wintery cold surrounding them in Liesel's time of death. Lastly, the color white exaggerates the main setting of a deep winter, in which death is frequently found.

Quote: "It was white. It felt as though the whole globe was dressed in snow. Trees wore blankets of ice. I studied the blinding, white - snow sky who stood at the window of the moving train... Curiosity got the better of me, and I resigned myself to stay...Twenty - three minutes later, ... a small soul was in my arms," (Zusak 6-8).

YELLOW

Death uses the color yellow as a warning sign, just like the yellow ones we see driving. He also uses yellow as a comparison with optimism, sunshine, and youth. More specifically, Death describes Rudy's hair to the color of lemons. Also, during bombings, the sky is tinted with yellow, supporting yellow as a warning sign. Lastly, Death uses yellow as an enhancer to the event or setting he describes in the novel.

Quote: "Things like Rudy on a dais with three gold medals slung around his neck. Hair the color of lemons was written beneath it," (Zusak 444
