The butterfly that founds its flower follows the fragrance

황금 같은 꾀꼬리는 버들 사이로 왕래한다
And the golden nightingale comes and go through the branches of the willow tree

장장추야 긴긴 밤에 실솔의 소리도 처량하다
During the long nights of Autumn, the crickets’ is plaintive

임을 그리워 젖는 베개, 어느 누가 알아주리
The pillow drenched when you miss your lover, who can see that?

학도 뜨고 봉도 떴다, 강상에 두루미 높이 떠서
The cranes and ducks fly away in the frost, as the red-crowned crane flies high in the sky

두 나래를 훨씬 펴고, 우줄우줄 춤을춘다
Its wings stretch out as mush as they can and dance with rhythm

Gagok (가곡) is a small genre within Korea's Traditional voice music that ancestors (Choseon people) from Korea sang since 16th century and continued until now with some changes made as over time. It was most of the time sang by intelligent, well - educated scholars at that time. At that time, there were 13 main Gagok that these scholars favored to sing which was composed by Shin Jae Hyo (1812~1884) and Taepoengga is the last one on the list and the only one to have men and women vocals sing at the same time with same lyrics and harmony that matches exquisitely, when the other 12 songs let the two different gender sing different lyrics at different 
time. Therefore, Gagok Taeppeonga is just a traditional music for the ancestors to sing along with different traditional instrument.

The other Taeppeonga is also called Niliria. This one is in Guk – ak style,  which is Korea’s another traditional singing. Niliria is a more famous one than Gagok Taeppeonga because it was created later on and many modern artists have already had their own fusion of it.

I chose to continue on the task with the Taepeonga - Niliria song.

Chorus 1 --> Silence with only the melody of the traditional song on electric piano

Verse 1 --> fun beat with the continuing rhythm of the traditional song

Chorus 2 --> starting with a change of fast drum, fun and bright fast beat with the melody

Bridge --> fusion of chorus 2 and verse 2 mood

Verse 2 --> fun mood, different with verse 2

Chorus 3 --> Repeating of choruses above

Imply guzheng, dizi since similar to piri and gayagum in Korean traditional.

I first thought of creating the song to convey a message through a song that makes it like a story but the problem was that it was too difficult. So just separated the moods.

 

The beginning of the song first started with an electronic sound, transited by a drum sound it changed to the part with the melody of that Chestnut traditional song. This was a good transition to begin because it gave me time to expect  something different from the beginning was coming up next and since it is just the start, she haven’t use much powerful transition. However, it was kind of a disappointment when a more relaxing melody and beat compared to the beginning came in. As a whole, she has used 5 different beat and melody. Even though the beginning beat that she started off with was used again at the end, the strong beat after that made me forget about it. If take it positively, she have tried to create different verses. The transition is the factor that she has done most effectively and it sounded like an actual song, even if it was more than 2 minutes, I could not realize it because the song flew really well and different verses were put into it. I would give her a grade around 6 and 7.

 Min Ju Kang - Thapenagga (Niliria)
This is a personal reflection after the project. After the final creation, I believe I have not been successful in fusing the two type of music together. The song was too separated into parts that went around classic then hip hop then classic then EDM. I believe I have done well in the different parts but not when it comes to combining them all together like a song. I think the last part of the song was fine with the "blast" feeling at the end. The intention of trying to give an original song first so that the audience would know the traditional song first and then take them into the Hip Hop beat with the electric piano sound of Niliria then make the Piri sound and make the mood happy again. However, I should have only insert the classical part once in the middle. I believe I have put a piano part and Flute part twice because I was first planning to use Flute t make Piri sound in the middle to create the traditional sound but then I did not know a way to  start the song so I used the piano. The final product does not sound like a song due to the transition too, the change between parts was not flowing well. Also, I think the change of similiar soundtrack beats in the second part was effective  too because it didn't make it boring. The EDM, Hip Hop beat at the end after the Flute sound had seemed to left the audience remember that part so maybe that is a positive thing too.
