I was a important part of my film. I was the main editor, an actor, and a helper to the director. While editing I had to find how to use the footage that we shot. The main problem was the director had cut it to short or started to late. I had to find shortcuts to see how to make everything fit together. While being an actor I had to carry the role of being in character and being a helper to the director. I was constantly trying to help get the right angles and keep everything consistent with the film. The summary of the film, A kid gets bullied and the friend of the bully helps the kid get help.

There was many mistakes, although that is guaranteed with our first movie. The title card in the beginning was very bland. We could've made it better to make it more interesting and a hook. The transitions were a problem too. We could've had clips in between some films to make it smoother because it was quite a motif that cuts were made fast and it seemed choppy. We could've have added more consistent camera angles, and more of a flow going. For example, when the bully pushes me down (the bullies friend) we could have added a clip showing me fall.

GENRE AND REPRESENTATION REFLECTION

In class we covered: thriller, war, animation, comedy, musical, mystery, horror, romance, sci-fi, sports, drama, crime, adventure. We studied the conventions, codes, and audience expectations. For conventions we learned about stories, characters and their representations, setting, iconography, values. For codes we learned about cinematic elements including camera work, lighting, editing and special effects. For the audience expectations we learned that have emotions and reactions. For each movie genre we watched three different clips in three different time period to highlight the evolution of the genre. For some of the clips they were used as hybrids. A hybrid is a movie with more then one genre.

The genres in the first film my group filmed was drama. The second film's genre was romance drama. The first film is a drama because the focus of the movie is the about a new kid at school getting bullied. We wanted to create a feeling of sympathy from the audience towards the main character. We used different camera angles and shots like close ups and tracking to display this. In our second film, we intended for the audience to feel suspense and a sense of romance since our film was about two brothers going to New York and later one of the brothers getting kidnapped by the other's lover. We used camera shots and angles such as tracking, two shots, close ups, and three shots. We also used wide shots and zoom ins to show the audience the inside scoop of what was really happening. In my personal opinion, I think our group could've worked better on portraying the genre of drama and romance, because when we presented our film, we weren't expecting a comedic reaction from the audience, which is what we got.

My favorite movie genre is action. If I were to create my own action film, I would base it off of an intense adventure scenario such as one with fights and explosions. The camera shots would be fast paced and have a lot of handheld tracking to create the feeling that the audience is moving through the adventure with them.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Film

During the months of November and December of 2022, my class and I learned about editing, sound, and screenwriting/screenplay format. We studied film editing concepts and created documents featuring 20 plus kinds of editing techniques. We also watched a documentary on film editing ("The Cutting Edge") and a video on use of color. We studied sound basics and watched a documentary on cinema sound ("Making Waves"). As an an example of a screenplay we read "The Incredibles," and learned how to format our own screenplays using special software, and then wrote a two minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare as the basis for your midterm film project.

In this section you will describe the requirements of the midterm film: one to two minutes; horror or horror hybrid; an "opening" rather than a finished film product; minimal dialogue (mostly music, sound effects/ambience); no wall-to-wall music; no long takes; start in black with company ident and/or logo and title and (optional) credits before straight cut or dissolve to first image; minimum of three crosscuts between actor and nightmare; edited/shot/uploaded by student; accompanying blog post.

In the film we made, it had to include one close up; one dutch angle; one high or low angle; one low key light set up or one silhouette; one pan or tilt or track/push or spinaround; one zoom or dolly zoom; one subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut; one match cut; one J cut or L cut; one use of slow or fast motion; one intentional use of color for story/emotion; one instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup; one instance of visual complexity in setting choice (color, texture, depth, lines, shapes, etc.); three sound effects; one piece of incidental music or one sound motif repeated three times. Aside from what was was required in the film, we were able to add extra credit which included: quick cuts; montage; wide establishing shot; split screen; POV shot; reflection shot; intentional break of the fourth wall; intentional break of the rule of thirds; rack focus or pull focus shot; intentional use of handheld camera work; use of color filters to create a dream like quality; fisheye lens or fisheye effect; company logo with high quality graphic.

One horror convention I adhered to very closely is the addition of a zombie type creature as the antagonist. As that is an repeating element that frequently is involved in other horror movies. I used this element in mine. Another convention I adhered to was the addition of a chase sequence. This is another repeating element that is frequently used in other horror movies, that I took aspiration from and used in mine. An audience expectation I stick to was the suspense of the antagonist. I made my antagonist use few words to add to the suspense of the story. A horror movie convention I broke was how my movie lighting compares to the typical horror movie, by using brighter lights. I did this because it added more of an array to the setting of the movie. An audience expectation I broke was the antagonist and protagonist never had a interaction, it suddenly cut to them already having a rivalry. An idea I represented was a human who is experiencing an nightmare. I showed the nightmare then the real life effects of the nightmare it had on the human experiencing it. I didn't directly show it but I did show him tossing and turning in his bed in the real world.

There were many successful moments in my movie. For example, I clearly showed the cross between the actor having the nightmare, and the nightmare itself. My story line came across as clear and my editing made the cross between inside the nightmare and the actor physically. An unsuccessful part was I could've added a clear motive to the antagonist. I used my phone and an app called "CapCut." I finally learned the process between pre production and production .

TWO MINUTE FILM OPENING ANALYSIS

The camera pans to a man smoking a cigarette in his car after he is shown trembling while pointing a revolver at two women. Dramatic thriller is the film's genre. Since there are no opening credits, they are probably at the film's conclusion. The opening shot begins as a close-up, then it pans out and changes to a medium three-shot. A close-up of the man in the car follows. The film opens with the sound of a fire burning and ominous noises, followed by the sound of the man panting and the gun moving around. I don't know how to describe the editing style quite yet because we have seen such little content. It fed into the stereotype of burglary in the beginning. The first two minutes did not break any conventions. It did show victims but I wouldn't call that a social group. I believe they put the movie on the big screen first was because it was the only main platform to get movies popular at the time it was made.

The vision statement that we will edit it in a eerie way to purpose the feeling of being kidnapped. We will include POV shots to add to the realism. While editing I will use my tools to add a sense of suspense. This will mean I will use slow motion and darker tones of color to indicate the darker tones and add to the suspension. I will use the influence of other movie opening to showcase when and how to cut. I have researched the most successful horror movies and studied how the films are edited and will use those techniques to my advantage. I will edit to add mystery to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. I will take influence from other openings to what kind of logo's to create and when to input them into the opening. This means using darker tones and more of a jump scare to initiate the fear of the audience before the movie even starts. I will use photoshop to create the logo but use the editing software to add effects to make it a darker tone. I will use extreme movement to jump scare the viewers. I will use straight cuts and quick fasts to add to make it quicker to add to the scare factor of the movie. I will utilize other type of cuts with a faster pace to make the movie more intense and more cramped. To make the view nervous. This will include fast cuts. I will not use slower transitions because my group wants it more fast paced to make it more intense. With sound, I will use soft sounds but suddenly add more harsher sound effects to make the viewer sit on the edge of their seat, to entice them. I will make most of the sounds digitally. For music I will add an intense beat song. Nothing soothing or calming. There is a way to use copy right music by using a website and buying it, however we will not use any.

Independent Distribution and Marketing Plan - Heart Stolen

1. While trying to independently distribute my movie, I would try to go to a sales agent to try to get my movie into a theater. I think my movie would succeed in a theater since my movie's target audience would blow it up. My target audience is known for going into theaters. I would also try to get into a famous film market. I would try and expand from Naples and try to get into more recognizable one, like

Cannes Marché Du Film"

AFM American Film Market.

European Film Market.

I would also try and upload into streaming websites. I could upload to YouTube for free, however I would try to get into more streaming services like Netflix, or Hulu. I think this would not be the best route but it would be the easiest and cheapest. I would first try to go for lower streaming services so I can get more of an audience and then go for the bigger fish.

2. We had an original title of "----" however it did not meet our expectations. This is because we thought it did not have a marketable name. It was something that did not roll of the tongue. We switched it to "Heart Stolen" this fits the movie by making it a play on words. Stolen refers to the kidnapping and heart refers to the romantic part of the movie. The classic saying of "Stolen Heart" is used here. It also rolls of the toungue and we can see it in an ad or a movie. It is easy to remember which can lead to word of mouth marketing.

3. "Who's Bella's kidnapper." This tagline will add to the mystery and theories circulating through word of mouth. Will keep the audience on the edge of their seats because they will not know who did it.

4. The target audience is a teenage girl. They are a girl and of the age 12-17. They are in high school so their income isn't very high and mostly rely on their parents to support them. They have normal teenage hobbies like sports and extracurriculars. As teenagers they mostly care about drama and social circumstances. The movie will have lots of drama so it will excite them. They are apart of school organizations. The target audience is on every social media as they are teenagers. They follow famous influencers who can advertise the movie. They don't really play video games except for the occasional mobile game. Which can be easy to advertise on. They hang out in usually places. However, movies are a regular place for dates. They do watch movies for entertainment. They don't buy or rent anything seriously but they do buy things for fun. This can be mobile games, and movie tickets.

5. We can advertise on mobile games where teenage girls usually play. We can use the information from question 4 in where to put our ads. In locations and websites that the target audience can be found on the daily.
VIRTUAL:
1. Mobile games, target audience will see it while playing.
2. Youtube, target audience watches videos and will see it.
3. Instagram, target audience will see it while scrolling
4. Influencers, target audience looks up to influencers and see the film market.
5. Snapchat, target audience scrolling through the app will see it.
6. Tiktok, target audience will see it scrolling through the app.
NON-VIRTUAL
1. Posters around school, this is a place lots of the target audience is located.
2. Mercato/ Other Plazas, target audience likes to hang out there.
3. Billboards, target audience will see it driving.
4. On trees with posters. Target audience will see

These are the ways I would self distribute if I had to.

6. I would engage my target audience by locating ads in places and websites where my target audience can be found. I would turn passive audience members by making them talk about the movie. In the trailer we can input a cliff hanger to get the target audience to talk about and speculate. This will market through word of mouth. I will use pull marketing or interactive marketing. I will make my target audience click on the ads by offering them look like things they are interested and incorporate themes they will like. I would incentives them to repost by making them talk about it by making theories.

7. After doing a google search for the CLIO awards we thought our poster should have a bright color tone, however also hints of dark color to show the dark tones of the movie. The bright color would bring in the target audience. It would be familiar cause we will use the classic movie poster of faces but we will also include mystery with dark tones over the faces however everything else will be bright. Main colors would be black, pink, red and white. The foreground will be the actors/characters faces with half dark and half bright tones. The background will be bright. more bright colors to bring in the target audience. We will use iconography to input weapons and tools later used in the movie. Fonts would be youthful and colorful to bring in the target audience.

8.

We discovered while making our film that getting all the sound you want without a microphone may be quite challenging. The filming was unstable when the cinematographer had to move behind our actor, making it difficult to follow along. The outside illumination caused the clips to not turn out as well as we had intended. According to the feedback we've received, this movie has to be reshot because it's difficult to grasp what we're attempting to do. For our group editor to successfully use the new material, the transitions must be more fluid, and we require extra time at the beginning and end of the video. My crew will reshoot in the near future in the hopes of accomplishing our initial goals. We also concluded that some of the dialog needed to be modified. The background noise from the bustle in the gas station made it difficult to hear the performances.
