However, he says it is "not about repetition for repetition's sake," but a way to "better isolate and focus on and focus on the harmonics." I very much agree with this, because when that original tone stays the same, it quickly becomes familiar to the ear and allows the listener to hear how it is compatible with other harmony melodies. It doesn't even have to be one single tone, for this concept can be conveyed through the type of notes used, such as all quarter or eighth notes. While it can be at times frustrating or hard to understand, it is an interesting way to communicate different moods in songs. Through (nearly) the entire thing, the piano plays staccato quarter notes in groups of two. It flutters there in the background, showing Cathy's hopefulness and desire to reconnect with her husband. It briefly fades away during her furious rant, and returns in the end as she becomes exhausted and loses motivation to keep trying to get through to him. It is interesting how the piano comes back the exact same, but the feel is completely different.
