When I consider lessons like this, I try to imagine how they apply to me teaching. The biggest way I identified with the suggestions and strategies in your presentation was in being mindful of speech patterns/speed/clarity. I tend to speed up when I'm speaking as I try to get ideas out faster and faster; clearly, this could be a problem for students. It's helpful to have simple suggestions in mind such as speaking slower and considering cadence. I also found it useful to keep in mind that idioms and other devices we use in everyday speech are not often translatable, and could lead to confusion for ELL's. The more you think about it, the more you realize how rife conversational speech is with English-specific references, turns of phrase, and slang. It's not fair to subject emerging bilinguals to that while they are already dealing with the stress of hearing instruction in another language.  Thanks for taking the time to share your insights with us. Before I get into the content, I'd like to say that I really appreciated your presentation. I'd say that you all displayed a real ability to engage students. Your presentation was a highlight of the night. As for content, I particularly appreciated the section on enunciation, even if it made me a little nervous. I feel like cadence is one of those things that is so easy to lose track of. Perhaps because we are constantly engaging in speech that our patterns become automatic/habitual. I know that I have a tendency to speak fast or mumble when I'm not paying attention to how I'm speaking. Now I'll be tracking that as well as curbing the impulse to swear! One sticking point for me way: "do you think that this strategy discourages use of native accent in any way?" I'd be interested to hear your feedback. Thanks again!

As a group we were able to have discussions that connected learning from other courses into instruction of ELLs, specifically modifying instruction for UDL, which ELLs should take into consideration. It was helpful to explore different subject areas in relation to language instruction. This reaffirmed my understanding of the elements of language, and reminded me that language demands are always context specific. 

My group members were a pleasure to work with. The interactions were engaging and rewarding. This is not my favorite format for collaboration. I would enjoy the opportunity to do more extensive research and content creation within a team environment. In general I like duos for this work. SO, when assignments do not meet my preferences the onus fall upon me to maximize my engagement and challenge perceived limitations of the lesson design.

I enjoy studying the elements of language. I would like to commit myself to exploring/researching the field of linguistics and ESOL. Right now, I feel like I need to practice the rudiments of analysis in addition to deep diving areas of interest. This will help me serve ELLs in my future classroom.

We noticed a lot of interdisciplinary overlap between the challenges that teachers face when conveying course content to ELLs. My group mates were wise to utilize these commonalities as the connective tissue for our presentation.
I enjoyed working with my group quite a lot. I was able to learn something new in all of our discussions, and appreciated when we were able to build upon common interests/criticisms related to the text. Unfortunately, due to a schedule change, I was quite ill during the majority of our preparation time, and felt that my own portion was a bit rushed as a result. All things considered, I'm happy with the result and hope to work with any/all members of this group again soon.
I feel as though I learned some useful strategies for teaching science to ELLs, though I could have foreseen the challenges faced by the language of science prior to reading this chapter. After an undergraduate program and subsequent work in the sciences I am well acquainted with the unique genre of expression required for English and have reflected on the challenges ELLs would face when adopting these new linguistic skills. We've been reflecting on these methods for quite some time, but I think what I learned most from this chapter is that these requirements are not all that different than those of math and social studies. As a student in high school I was good at most tests but I never felt confidence as a test taker and it always gave me a lot of anxiety when I knew a test was coming up. Knowing the panic I felt as a monolingual student when taking my SATs gives me empathy for ELL students who may not be fairly judged on a given content area if their language skills aren't proficient enough to receive instructions solely in English.
