I take dietary supplements daily. I take calcium and iron pills. I take iron pills because my doctor recommended I should since I am a girl and I have my period regularly, he said that it is beneficial and that most girls should do it. I just recently started taking calcium pills. I take calcium pills because I have a stress fracture in my arm and I have injuries to my ankle multiple times. I drink milk, but now I take calcium pills to hopefully help make my bones stronger.

"When we look at what we eat and how we grow it, we find extensive evidence for damage both to our food (from pollution and soil depletion) and to our environment (from the toxicity of growing foods industrially)" (Personal Wellness 12). Americans are cheap and we like cheap food, so we grow a lot of the cheapest sources of calories (corn and soybeans). Farmers that grow just these crops use lots of pesticides, fertilizers, and they deplete the soil of nutrients. The nutritional quality of our food has declined.

"Some dietary supplements might help you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients" (Personal Wellness 11). If you do not get enough vitamins and minerals in your everyday diet, taking dietary supplements may help you get those nutrients that you aren't getting enough of. There are, like many other things, risks to using dietary supplements. The iBook states, "Always be alert to the possibility of unexpected side effects, especially when taking a new product" (Personal Wellness 11). Some supplements do not interact well with some medicines.
