    ‘ABSTRACT’ OF THE EXPLORATORY RESEARCH CONDUCTED.          

           Researchers have found that teaching reading skills is a key element in developing student comprehension. However, many teachers lack a solid foundation for teaching these reading comprehension strategies. Therefore, teachers need to be prepared on how to design effective comprehension strategies and how to teach these strategies to their students. Therefore this study aims to study effective reading strategies in order to improve reading skills in language classes. The study is an action research applied to a number of 10 students in an intermediate level integrated skills course. Due to covid-19 pandemic, online classes fail to lay emphasis on reading skills. When the model reading was given, they would try to  follow. When they were asked to read any piece of writing other than the text, they would struggle with much difficulty. Then I started to focus on improving their reading and comprehension  by using ICT tools and different strategies. Both online and offline classes were conducted in order to bring desirable changes.

How can I motivate my students to read any piece of writing/newspaper articles. magazines, stories in English with proper pronunciation, stress, intonation and expression?

  • As teachers, we are hurried towards the completion of syllabus and many a times fail to give individual attention and often forget to conduct interactive activities which are more motivating than the printed readings.
  • Use of ICT is one of the most beneficial tools that holds the students'  attention towards learning. Use of online resources provided a wide range of opportunities to strengthen their abilities in  exploring reading. But the selection of topics must be based on students'  real contexts,  interests and likes.
  • Encouragement and rewarding also play a vital role. More and more we give them opportunities to come up with excellent performances. But the covid-19 pandemic made me conduct most of these activities online except for a few classes in the smart room.
  • For engaging the students online, I created a whatsapp group and started to communicate by sharing links to read newspapers, magazines, story books, good songs and even the useful  resources to improve reading skills.

       I work in a government school that is Karnataka Public School Hegganahalli  as an assistant teacher in English. 
      I took English medium students for my action research. Most of them could read the text well whereas the other English study materials like newspapers, magazines are concerned,  they were not much confident.  I thought, this could be because of lack of motivation and exposure to new vocabulary they come across in those  contexts.
  This project involved the students of grade IX of a government school English medium section in an urban setup with English being the second language. After indulging in through observation, I was able to notice the complications  that my students encountered in reading a text, / a piece of writing/ newspaper etc. When a model reading was given, probably they would get the pronunciation and stress and read properly.  Because of the pandemic, online classes are not laying emphasis on students' reading aloud.
