Personal Definition of Leadership

According to my Reflection #1 assignment, "Leadership to me means to be a motivator, someone to look up to, and an image to younger generations. Whoever shows leadership has the ability to make others follow their direction with their personality and the other skills they have pursued in order to become the leader they are today. This is important because in order for an idea to be shared around or for anything to work, there needs to be a great leader behind it all."

My definition so far has stayed the same, I still feel and think that leadership means all of this. Although I have learned about various leadership definitions in class and in my textbook. I would say my perspective of leadership has grown instead of changed.

Leadership Theories Application

Which three theories most inform your leadership practice? How do you define the theories?
My top three leadership theories would be the Behavioral Approach, Servant Leadership and Adaptive Leadership. I would define the Behavioral Approach as what the leaders do and how they act towards their followers and ideas. There is a leadership grid that includes 5 types of concerns, that includes maximum and minimum concern for the task and followers. There is the country-club management, impoverished management, middle of the road management, authority-compliance management and team management. Authority-compliance is the ideal management you would want to be at as a leader because it has high concern for the task and the followers. While the others have one but not the other or mediocre concern for both.

Servant leadership to me is when the leaders serve to their followers. A leader's main focus and goal is seeing their ideas and followers thrive. These kind of leaders have a lot of characteristics that make them a servant leader, like empathetic, aware and healing.

Adaptive leadership is really all about change. It involves helping others change and helps them adjust to new situations.

How do you see yourself implementing them in your future?
I see myself using all of these theories in the future for me. I especially like to use behavioral approach because it is self-explanatory and it makes sense. I also feel that I want to use authority-compliance management due to it involving high concern for the task and the followers. I like the idea of using servant leadership because I personally feel that it's the leader's job to want better for their ideas and followers. As a leader, I'll do everything I possibly can to see progress in everything. Adaptive leadership is very similar to servant leadership, so I can interchange both of these. Since it involves change and growth, I can help my followers go through the process they need to go through so they can reach their full potential for an end result.

Plan For the Future

Where have you come from? What critical life events have influenced you and contributed to your leadership development?

I came from a suburban city in Michigan. Some of the events that impacted my leadership development is the leadership positions I have had throughout my life. The earliest leadership position I can remember growing up was being 4th grade class president. I made a lot of important decisions for my class, like less homework and more pizza parties. As I moved onto high school, I had an executive position at my school's Key Club as 10th grade leader. There I made decisions on like what community service events to plan for and took opinions from the other students. As I move onto junior year, I have the position of being secretary for a group called Delta G.E.M.S. Then for my senior year I was the president for the same group. So from a young 4th grader to a high school senior, there is a huge amount of progress of me being a leader.

Where are you going? Where do you picture yourself in the future?

Right now I am going to improve myself as a leader while I am in college. I can see myself having important leadership roles in my job and in organizations. In the future, I see myself being my own boss and leader as a clinical child psychologist.

As a leader, what are some of your strengths and how do you plan to develop them further? (How can your strengths from StrengthsFinder aid you?)

My strengths consist of communication, creativity, courageous, empathetic, friendly and independent. I plan to exemplify them all through my growth and progress as a leader. It will show my followers all of the great qualities about me as a leader. The strengths from StrengthsFinder show me how good of a leader I really am and what are things I really do not need to work on rather more of what I need to fix or improve on.
As a leader, what is one area you feel that you need to grow? Why is it important to develop this leadership skill?

I feel that I need to work on being confident. Sometimes I can be a bit soft spoken and not want to be a leader at a time when I should be. This is extremely important because none of my followers are going to take me seriously if I am not confident in myself. Most likely the followers are going to run over me and try to take advantage of me if I show that I am not confident in myself.

In the beginning of the semester, I had the most basic idea of leadership based off of my prior knowledge of it. Throughout the semester I learned a lot about leadership and it's many ideas with the help of my professor, Northouse Leadership textbook, activities, assignments, projects and Student Leadership Challenge textbook. I got to see how leadership evolved and what kinds of theories, leaders there are and so much more! Even if theories was not the best idea of leadership I still saw the way how leaders learned from their mistakes.

I still use the prior knowledge I had before but now I have more bigger ideal set of what the best leader is for me. The knowledge I have now is what I can use for the future leader I plan to be.
