Use this oversimplified satire of how different nations got pulled into World War 1 and act it out as a humorous but accurate skit that summarizes the main points of how each nations got involved in WW1 as this short story does.

Choose a battle from WWI (preferably one that was out in natural surroundings, and not a town). Find an outdoor site that resembles this WW1 battle site. While there (or prior to arriving), review a resource that gives information about that particular battle, especially in the area similar to where you are or will be. Try to find a resource that discusses a particular soldier or officer who would have been there during the battle. Then walk the area as if you are that soldier or soldier's ghost (if they died on the field of battle) walking the field where he died. Consider how the area was different during the battle, particularly on the day of the soldiers death. Try to hear the sounds that he would have heard then compared to what you are hearing now. Do the same with the other senses: smell, see, feel, and perhaps even taste. Consider how this impacts the human perspective of war and how it can change the most natural setting into something tragic.

After or during a "Naturalist" walk of a real or similar former battlefield, take a few moments to reflect the experience that you, as the soldier, went through before, during, or after this particular battle. Consider the things you saw, heard, smelled, touched, or tasted during your walk of the "battlefield". Make a journal entry that reflects what that soldier may have experienced as you write from his perspective. Make sure your date and the particulars of the battle are historically accurate.

(Teacher Notes: Each student will choose or be assigned {differentiated by reading level can be used in classes that have students on IEPs for reading or for students who struggle to read grade level texts})

Skim through the intro texts to the Treaty of Versailles to understand who was involved in the Treaty and read background knowledge of the treaty beforehand.

Within the class, choose or be assigned an article from the Treaty. Read article thoroughly to establish understanding of the text. Summarize or reword the article into modern language AND create an explanation that shows how this article would be applied.

Then, break into groups of three to four (groups made up of consecutive numbers). Within your group, discuss your individual articles and come up with a concise three to four sentence summary of each of the articles.

When we come back whole group, the summaries will be read aloud in consecutive order. Whole group discussion will follow with students discussing which articles they feel were the most impactful and which ones were the most difficult to enforce.

Choose All Quiet on the Western Front OR 1917 (or another approved WW1 film) and view it independently. Reflect (either internally or with annotations) regarding how a main character interacts with other characters and events throughout. Come to class prepared to discuss/critique (in whole group, small group, or independently in a journal entry) the impact of the movie on you personally as well as the perceived authenticity of the movie, based on your previous research on the particular content of the film.

Using a media of your choosing (paper and colored pencils, canvas and paint, papier mache, Google Draw, Canva, etc.) create a map that encompasses the 15 most influential battles/sites. Provide a key that includes an explanation that supports why you have included this event in your top 15. Be prepared to present in a whole or small group in class and to defend your top 15 in discussion.

Using Google Slides, Power Point, or Notecards:

1) Create a chronological slideshow of the 20-25 most important events from the beginning to the end of WW1. DO NOT USE DATES. Make sure you have a SEPERATE key of some kind so you don't forget the order they are supposed to be in.

2) THEN mix up the order of your slides or cards really well

3) Trade with a partner.

4) It is the partners job to get the slides back into chronological order from beginning to end.
