Why is it difficult for instructors and authors of educational materials to specify in detail the procedures for teaching music to all fifth grade classes?

It's really difficult to be able to detail specific plans because everything is entirely based on the student's needs. Each student's musical abilities differ from one another, and plans and procedures will often change and adapt to meet the needs of the class at the time.

What is an observable behavior? Why are observable behaviors so important in analyzing the teaching process?

An observable behavior is the action demonstrated by the students. It is important to have these observable behaviors to see how the students are interpreting your lessons, and see how the lesson sticks.

What are' the benefits to music teachers, including directors of performing groups, of planning for their classes and rehearsals?

Planning is going to allow for more structure in teaching students, and it will block out time for certain smaller lessons, and how to teach them. Certain techniques and exercises can be taught during these times, showing students how pieces should be performed, or instruments should be played. For assessing, it will give the teacher more structure of what works and doesn't work for the students.

What are the advantages of unit planning?

Unit planning has a more long term goal, but is more specific than an overall year or semester goal. Planning units will have the students dive more into a topic instead of just surface level skimming. It will end up with the students having a better understanding therefore appreciation for the topic.

What factors should music teachers consider when planning for a class or rehearsal?

Teachers will need to decide which pieces to study, what should be learned alongside the pieces, and where in the pieces should be emphasized. Teachers need to consider the class's abilities and technique, and what the students enjoy doing. This section says to end with a review of something else they've been working on, and perfect it.

Teachers need to have insight about how well the students achieved the objectives. Observing this behavior will show the teacher how they need to approach the lesson next time, and in turn make the teacher a better educator. Assessing can also have better grading, and depending on how the students are assessed, it forces them to think more about what they learned and apply it.

What is the main difference between testing and assessing?

Tests are used to grade students typically, and is representative of material covered in class. They need to have clearly correct answers, while assessing classes is more about seeing what the students learned and retained. When a teacher sees this, they understand what worked and didn't work from their lessons. In the end, these assessments will help a teacher realize what they need to work on to become a better educator.
