For me, sometimes I really need to be actively involved in the conversation, especially if I have a passion for the particular subject. Other times, I need to feel comfortable taking more of a backseat role, still engaging with the material but allowing myself the time to think and process and formulate a response without jumping straight into the conversation.

I work best with clear and direct instructions when completing a task in a collaborative group.

I am easily distracted by sidebar conversations that are not part of the discussion. When working with a group, I learn best when I can avoid this behavior.

I appreciate when people let me know if I'm using terms or making references that don't make sense to them--after working in the very specific bubble of NYC independent schools for so long, it's hard to recognize when I'm speaking in the language of my bubble! (And I'll do the same when others use their own "bubble-language.")

I love collaboration - so much good comes out of it. However, team norms and expectations are always beneficial to prevent one person tkaing over, or another person not feeling heard. I think teambuilding activities are always good to provide the foundation for trust and safety.

I prefer when the people around me have their laptops closed and phones away, especially if we're having a discussion that doesn't involve taking notes or reading material from a screen. It's hard to feel like people are interested in what you have to say when they are looking at screens. I don't want to have to tell adults to put the screens away, but it just makes for such a nicer atmosphere if people are showing they are paying attention to one another.

I need a certain level of respect for strong opinion. I sometimes feel in the social studies/social science space that there is a valorization of neutrality. I think this does a disservice to us as educators and to our students. We are fully realized people who have opinions on the material we are engaging with, making space for this reality will make me far more comfortable.
