My stellar backchannel into the real meaning of Digital Literacy by Alethea Ballard

Made with an epic smile, and a lot of highlighter colors! But let me preface this padlet with a brief statement. When I am reading texts I am always playing devil's advocate with the author as I read. I often feel as though I am having a conversation with the author as I read. I do this because I am trying to challenge my own way of thinking and others as well. This process is to better inform not just me, but my peers and my students. I teach this process of always questioning to my students - luckily many already are inquisitive enough or are interested enough to do this on their own. **Please note, I have chosen this type of padlet style for a reason. I want to shed some light on how this current generation takes in content via "Reading Digitally" I think that there is a lot to be said about the topic by adults but do they (I'm purposefully not including myself here) really understand what digital reading looks like for a student, and how that student processes the information? So, I have set up my note-taking system in a way someone would hold a discussion. This is also ironically enough the same way we read "meme's" on Instagram. I will be using this process in my own classroom with my high schoolers.

With the Google Apps for Education and the 1:1 Chrome books being pushed out - technology can and is being used in more then just the Language Arts classroom.

Me: "I wonder if there are standards that are realized or being used for preparing students for the workforce. This might be obviously more geared towards secondary thinking and learning, but can we/should we gear students to strengthen their digital literacy or just literacy skills in the context to prepare them for the "workforce". I think it is crucial that we come to terms that not every student will go to a four year college - which is fine! We should make sure we teach them the appropriate literacy skills for various environments. Social communication/professional communication-teaching students to ask and seek the differences between various types of communications and interactions."

Me: "Suggested edit and observation I would like to make here - (1) "the use of digital technology <del>often </del>requires..." no, sorry, it always requires. (2) Literally, artists and art teachers have been doing and teaching students this for waaay longer then digital media has been around. We (artists/those who are observant of what learning actually is) made this known and have been teaching students to be receptive, productive, interact with the environment around them, and create meaning. The "multiple modalities" that they are referring to here are what we call in the art world, (which is actually the regular world but with an artist talking out-loud and actually being listened to) mediums. Mediums are/is a term to describe the stuff that you make with. It can be literally anything from a pencil to a computer, to copper to yarn or thread."
