His Mom was a teacher, so he only saw her during the summer.  Paul devoted his life to math because he loved it.  He wasn't very good at anything else, such as making his own food, buttering his bread, and doing his laundry, as stated by the author.  Math became his favorite subject because it came so easy to him.
