He is an informant for an agent of the Securitate, secret police. He feels guilty from keeping it from his family. He likes a girl named, Lilliana and adores his grandfather. He feels really guilty about being an informer and is becoming more rebellious as time goes on. He starts protesting for Romanian people, because of this he went to a prison camp with Lilliana but got out. Once out he witnesses the fall of Ceausescu. Lilliana and him get together at the end, stating that they love each other.

Cici Florescu

She tries apologizing to Cristian and it seems like she feels guilty and really cares about Cristian but he pushes her away. In the epilogue we find out Cici was a double agent and worked for America too. She was trying to get passports for her and her brother. We also find out she was killed during the revolution.

Bunu Florescu

Luca did not inform on Cristian. He was protesting for Romanian people, against Ceaucescu. He got shot while protesting and ending up in the hospital losing his arm.

In the epilogue we find out the reason he stopped talking at home is because he knew that Cici and mama were informers.

He is paranoid, and it shows because he sends securitate (his secret police) to watch people and ensure they are maintaining loyalty and bugs everyone's homes to listen to their conversations. He is very selfish, this is shown often throughout the book especially at the end when we learn he was living like a king while everyone else was barely surviving. At the end of the book he is killed along with his wife mother Elena.
