Factors such as religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, family unit, and economic status majorly impact personal growth and development of children. These aspects shape the values and beliefs of a person. It impacts their self-perception, how they interact with the world, and how they make decisions. People are also greatly impacted by the way other people treat them based on these factors. For example, if a person is in a positive environment, where they are surrounded by culturally competent and accepting people, they will feel welcome and supported. They will thrive in this environment academically, emotionally, and socially. In a negative environment that is not accepting of peoples differences, a person will feel isolated. This could lead to an internal conflict as they struggle with their self-esteem. It could also lead to external conflicts with other people.

I would like to say that I am never implicitly bias, but that is very unlikely. Everyone has different experiences, values, and predispositions that affect how we interact with one another. There are a lot of things I am not fully educated on, such as different cultures, mental and physical disorders, as well as different experiences that I am unfamiliar with. If I do not expand my knowledge or stay open-minded, this could affect the dynamics of my future classroom. It is important that I take the time to learn and understand my students so I can create a welcoming and equitable learning environment. It is also easier for me to connect with people I relate to more. So if someone has similar experiences as me or goals of mine, I might interact or focus on them more. It is important that just because I can relate to a person more, that I don't prioritize them or expect them to act how I would. If I let this bias affect my teaching, other students in my class wouldn't feel appreciated or valued. They might not put in effort or come to me when they need help.

Cultural Competence Framework

The components of a cultural competency framework are valuing diversity, conducting ongoing self-assessments, managing differences, willingness to develop cultural knowledge, and ability to adapt to the cultural needs of the community. All of these aspects should be included in the framework because it creates a dynamic, supportive, and inclusive environment. By valuing diversity, you appreciate and embrace the differences in people's backgrounds, values, and beliefs. You make everyone feel valued and supported. Conducting ongoing self-assessments allows you to reflect on your actions. You try to see from the perspective of someone else and become more aware of how you impacted them. It allows you to grow and improve yourself. Managing differences involves developing ways to handle differences in a positive way. This could include asking questions, actively listening, and communicating effectively and respectfully. By having a willingness to develop cultural knowledge, you remain open-minded. You are eager to educate yourself and actively seek out knew information. This will give you knew insights and perspectives. Lastly, the ability to adapt to cultural needs of the community means being flexible. You are able to understand and adapt to different behaviors. You can effectively and respectively interact with a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds.

An example of implicit bias would be associating a stereotype to a certain gender. One stereotype is that men are stronger than women. A specific example of this would be if a teacher asked for specifically a boy to help carry heavy objects rather than thinking to include the girls. This would isolate the girls in the class and make them feel less valued or capable.

An example of cultural competency in the classroom would be a teacher incorporating diverse learning materials in the classroom. One specific example would be a teacher selecting books to read in the class that are centered on different cultures and characters with different backgrounds. This gives students the chance to resonate with the characters and invites them to share their insights during discussions. It also gives everyone in the class the opportunity to learn about different cultures, perspectives, and beliefs.

I can be mindful how how their backgrounds impact their learning styles and social behaviors. I can encourage respectful communication where students can share their perspectives. I can also put in effort to celebrate diversity in my classroom, whether that be by applying it to lectures, hanging posters and signs, or even just addressing cultural celebrations. Finally, I can take the time to reflect on my actions and put effort into addresses my implicit biases.

Implicit bias can impact a teacher's perceptions of children and families because teachers might make assumptions or have different expectations for different students because of their background. This leads to unequal treatment in the classroom. A teacher might hold different students to different standards, manage behaviors differently for different students, or even interact differently with different students. Teachers might interact differently with parents because of their background. They might communicate less with certain parents because they assume they are less involved in their child's academics than other parents. This overall could lead to students not reaching their full potential and cause emotional damage.
