Over the years I have worked in several different social justice fields. My first job out of college was teaching world languages and after school enrichment at the school I attended when I was in elementary school in Kentucky. From there, I moved to Philadelphia where I went on to work for the American Red Cross. The South Eastern Pennsylvania Red Cross has a very unique emergency shelter with social workers and housing for clients who have lost their homes to disaster. They did a very good job of understanding home damage in relation to socioeconomic status. When I moved to Los Angeles, I began working with a small art school called Play for ages 10 and under, teaching abstract art to kids with recycled materials. Next, I worked as a case manager for a domestic violence and sexual assault agency called Center for the Pacific Asian Family. Most recently, I've worked for Youth Policy Institute as a case manager for formerly incarcerated and "at-risk" youth.

I absolutely love podcasts and obviously in a town where we have nothing but time in the car, I've been able to get through a hefty amount of shows. One of my absolute favorites is Invisibilia, a podcast where hosts research and explain the "unseeable forces that control human behavior and shape our ideas, beliefs, and assumptions."

My hometown is Louisville, Kentucky, a small(ish) city in northern Kentucky, right on the border of Indiana. In Kentucky we identify as Southerners due to our food, culture, and all around love of bourbon. (The accents are pretty Southern as well.) A lot of my family and friends are still in Kentucky but many of them have had the chance to come and visit me in Los Angeles. Louisville is fairly liberal in its politics although Kentucky, as a whole, is very conservative. The home state of terrible politicians such as Mitch McConnell and Matt Bevin, we still have a long way to go.

I went to college at a small, Liberal Arts college called Earlham. Earlham is in Richmond, Indiana (it's okay if you've never heard of it.) I majored in Comparative Languages and Linguistics with a focus in French, Dutch, and Papiamentu, a creole language in the Dutch Caribbean. I minored in Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies and did my college thesis on the importance of teaching sensitive topics such as sex education in people's native language in order to combat the colonization of culture through language. In Curacao, Papiamentu is many people's first language, spoken at home and with family and friends. They are taught in Papiamentu in school until the age of 5 and then they are forced to switch to Dutch, the language of the country that colonized the island.

I absolutely love reading books and I especially love books that are able to bring together serious, non-fictional issues with beautiful fictional stories. There seems to be no better genre for this than Young Adult fiction. My most recent read is called Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany Jackson. It's the story of a young black girl in D.C. whose best friend goes missing and no one seems to notice. It weaves the intersection of racism and missing children as well as socioeconomic status in police interest. Here is the author explaining some of the book's core concepts.

Hi there! My name is Elizabeth Denny but I go by "Lizzy." I use she/her/hers pronouns. I'm originally from Louisville, Kentucky and I've been living in Los Angeles for three years now. I live in South Pasadena with my dog, Buddha, and my cat, Bug but I also foster animals regularly! I got my BA from Earlham College in Comparative Languages and Linguistics where I had the chance to study in Benin, the Netherlands, and Curacao. I love hiking, going to protests, and reading good books. I also do standup comedy and storytelling in my free time.
