The intended audience is the youth especially those who are in school, whether it's elementary, middle, or high school. The unintended audience is parents, teachers, or people who work with kids. I would even argue the audience this Ted Talk was directed towards was everyone; anyone who works, or goes to school.

I believe the rhetorical mode for this Ted Talk is argumentation because the speaker proves the validity of the idea of having mental health days. She does this by first, talking about the importance or mental health, how it affects the youth, and what she thinks is the next best step and solution for it.

To demonstrate ethos, the speaker talked about how her mom used to give the option of taking up to 3 mental health days per semester if she felt overwhelmed or it would affect her productivity she would take a day off for her mental health and give herself sometime to process and collect herself. Sometimes she wouldn't use all three days and other times she would use all three. With that, the speaker said overtime she got better at maintaining her mental health. So, with her back story, it showed her credibility to the subject due to the fact that she had experience.

With the topic being mental health, it was pretty easy for the speaker to appeal to the emotion side of the audience. Especially when she talked about how her mental illness resulted in her having breakdowns and panic attacks, which I'm sure many could empathize, if not, sympathize with her - I know I did. Essentially, if our mental health was not a priority it even manifest itself in physical forms such as nausea, headaches, shortness of breath, and more. Everyone has experienced it at least once in their life, which is another way she appealed to the audience in an emotional way.

One thing that the speaker said that I think we don't talk about enough is that mental health is just as important as physical health. And if our mental health wasn't taken care of, it would reflect in our day to day lives. She also mentions that before she started her journey to pass the house bill 2191, the second leading cause of death was suicide in Oregon for ages 10 to 24. So, that were she questioned if more people had access to help with their mental health, would it possibly prevent harmful consequences?

I think this Ted Talk definitely appealed to this generation or time the most because now mental health is being talked about more and how to handle it. Even those who live in an environment who don't have anyone to talk to about mental health, they have resources such as the internet to help them with how to deal with their mental crisis or even identify what it is that they are going through.
