Curly's Color - Kristen Ahlers

I've chosen the color black to represent Candy's situation. For a long time, he resolves himself to the idea that he is stuck in his present situation; since he was injured on the ranch, he is unemployable elsewhere. While the idea of getting a place with George and Lennie offers a fleeting dream, he soon realizes that it is an impossibility, and again embraces the darkness that is his future.

"He sniveled, and his voice shook. 'I could of hoed in the garden and washed dishes for them guys'...His eyes blinded with tears and he turned and went weakly out of the barn, and he rubbed his bristly whiskers with his wrist stump."(95-96).

Color of Friendship

I've chosen the color yellow to represent the importance of true friendship. Of Mice and Men represents a world of labor and a very poor financial upbringing. Having company can easily bring happiness for one another. With such circumstances, it would be probable for people to travel together. Slim states that " 'Maybe ever'body in the whole damn world is scared of each other' ". (34) There is a lingering fear of betrayal, because one might manipulate or use someone for own personal to gain their "own land". " 'Just like heaven. Ever'body wants a little piece of lan'. Nobody gets to heaven, and nobody get's no land.' "(72) Furthermore The Boss, Curley and Slim are unable to recognize friendship as they've all been so isolated, that they don't even know what it is. "We travel together," said George coldly. "Oh, so it's that way." George was tense and motionless. "Yea, it's that way." (25). Finally, Crook states that " 'A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. . . I'll tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick' " (71) and additionally George also stated " 'I seen guys that go around alone. It ain't good and they get mean.' " George and Lennie have each other's back to provide happiness and ultimately prevent themselves from being lonely and "going nuts".
