Because it relates to the cycle of life, religion is exhibited in the novel by Amelia Maugery and her reaction to her son's death. Mrs. Maugery explains, "visitors offering their condolences, thinking to comfort me, said 'Life goes on.' What nonsense, I thought, of course it doesn't. It's death that goes on" (104). Mrs. Maugery's statement makes it very clear that she does not believe in afterlife and views death as a negative event.

War: German Occupation Quote

Although WWI was very brutal and inhumane, the Germans that occupied Guernsey Island were much more lenient than the Germans that ran the concentration camps. Amelia Maugery wrote to Juliet Ashton, "Odd as it may sound, the Germans allowed -- and even encouraged -- artistic and cultural pursuits among the Channel Islanders. Their job was to prove to the British that the German Occupation was a Model Occupation" (49). This quote explains that the Germans, even though they would execeute punishment if necessary, were acceptive of literature.

For example, John Booker mentions that Seneca, a Roman philosopher, wrote the basic ideas of how people should live. Booker said, "[Seneca] was a Roman philosopher who wrote letters to imaginary friends telling them how to behave for the rest of their lives...his words travel well -- to all men in all times" (89). Booker further explains himself as he uses the Luftwaffe as an example by saying how their confidence is boosted after a fresh hairdo and relating that idea to Seneca's writings.
