"He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk. Next time there would be no mercy" (31). After missing his chance to kill the piglet, Jack feels embarrassed in front of Ralph and Simon. He then decides that there will be no mercy in the future so as to not seem like a lightweight. This hints at more cruel behavior throughout the book, from Jack and in general.

"I could swim when I was five. Daddy taught me. He's a commander in the Navy. When he gets leave he'll come and rescue us" (13). Ralph is still unaware of the severity of the situation by just assuming that his dad can just save them whenever he wants. His naivety morphs into reality once Piggy points out to him how stranded they actually are.

"The creature was a party of boys, marching approximately in step in two parallel lines and dressed in strangely eccentric clothing" (19). The boys are trying to emulate the soldiers, maybe their dads, that they see in order to possibly intimidate anyone they find. This shows the influence that the war has on young boys, especially if their fathers are involved.

"Aren't there any grownups at all?"
"I don't think so."
The fair boy said this solemnly; but then the delight of a realized ambition overcame him. In the middle of the scar he stood on his head and grinned at the reversed fat boy.
"No grownups!" (8) Ralph seems unexpectedly happy that there are no grown-ups on this island. This could possibly be due to the fact that he believes that his dad will come and rescue him but even then, it said that he grinned at the thought

"But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out:...yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart." (22) Just because Ralph had the conch, he now had greater respect from everyone else. Clearly this conch will be every important, because this is what legitimized Ralph's "ruling".

" 'I can't swim. I wasn't allowed. My asthma--' 'Sucks to your ass-mar!' "
Even though Piggy won't do certain things because of his asthma or what his aunt taught him, Ralph pushes him to explore. Ralph continues to be nice to Piggy, and eventually Piggy opens up and becomes more outgoing than when they first met. I think that as the book continues, Ralph will stick up for Piggy, even though it may seem like Ralph doesn't like Piggy;.

Until the grownups come to fetch us we'll have fun.'"
This continues to develop Ralph's desire to not have grownups on their island. This could be used to infer that Ralph wants to escape a terrible family life. This also shows how Ralph wants freedom still editing this...
