At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Johnny Tremain, Dusty, Dove, Cilla, and the rest of the Lapham family. The beginning also tells us of Johnny's arrogance to other members of his family and pride of his jobs. Johnny's master, Mr. Lapham needs to create a sugar basin, but due to his old age gives the job to Johnny. Johnny wants to get the sugar basin done by the deadline and decides to work on it whenever he can get the chance. Johnny finally met a terrible fate with his craftsman career, as he terribly injures his hand. Unable to become a craftsman ever again, Johnny looks for a new job. He eventually finds The Boston Observer, a print shop, and meets Rab. Johnny and Rab become friends, and Rab offers Johnny him a job if he can't find any other one. Unfortunately, Johnny is accused of theft when he really didn't steal anything. Johnny is of course innocent by the judges, which lifts Johnny's spirits.

Following the events in chapter 4, Johnny is accused by the same person for confessing his crimes, although Johnny needed money. Johnny escapes before he's arrested and now works with Rab in The Boston Observer. Rab teaches Johnny some other stuff, like learning to ride a horse and learning to write with his left hand. Johnny's behavior changes to that of Rab's and even vows to not lash out angrily. Unfortunately for Johnny, his vow is short lived, after one of Samuel Adam's slaves spills water all over Johnny. But after being apologized profusely and eating some of the slaves' pie, Adam hires Johnny to ride for the (later) Continental Congress. Johnny however becomes forgetful of his past life, only realizing that he hardly misses Cilla and Isannah after meeting them both at the water pump. He also forgets his promise to meet them again at the water pump. Later, American Colonists are mad about the way England taxes them, so they organize a meeting at The Boston Observer. The Observers agree to dump the tea overboard if the governor refuses to send ships to London. Rab is asked to recruit other people, and selects Johnny. After the governor refuses, The Boston Tea Party takes place. After The Boston Tea Party happens, England closes it's ports so that Boston pays for the tea. Boston meanwhile, gets food by land to avoid starvation. Johnny learns that Cilla works for Lavinia, Lyte's daughter, just so that she could keep Isannah from living with her. Johnny also discovers that Dove works for the English Colonial Smith. Dove is constantly bullied by British stable boys, but Johnny protects him as much as he can. Filled with good will, he hires Mr. Tweedie to mend his riding spur. Johnny also finds out that Madge has fallen in love with Gale, a British sergeant. Lieutenant Strange tries to commandeer Goblin (Johnny's horse), but is quickly stopped by Johnny's and Lydia cleverness. Strange offers to teach Johnny and Goblin to jump hurdles. The Lytes move to Boston after they were warned about the Whig mob. Johnny and Cilla go to the Lytes house to retrieve silvers left behind. Madge enlopes with sergeant Gale, and Mrs. Lapham marries Mr. Tweedie to keep their silver shop in the family. Cilla and Johnny also confess their love for each other. The Observers hold their last meeting, and are going to fight the British for the rights of every person, everywhere. The Observers eventually discover more things about the British, and Johnny is given an old uniform and musket from Pumpkin, a British member of The Observers. Johnny gives them to Rab. The Whigs sense that the British might begin to make military action and begin to warn the people. Rab goes to Lexington while Johnny stays in Boston. Johnny collects more info about the British and delivers the messages to multiple people in the relay system. The war begins in Lexington Green
