Typically in a road trip film we would see highways, roads, highway signs, gas stations, motels, and most of the time a bigger car or van. There's mostly an even balance between them being inside of the car driving and outside of the car, even at a mechanic.

Characters in this film are pretty typical and generic for a roadtrip film. Its a family with two kids and parents, as well as their grandfather and uncle. We would normally see a family as the main characters in a road trip film. themselves are a little different personality wise, but overall the characters fit into a roadtrip genre.

The plot of a typical road trip film would have themes of fleeing law enforcement, characters making self discovery, and conflict at the start of the film but end up liking them in the end. We see the similarities within the film and the genre like when the family get pulled over and have an interaction with the police. During the beginning of the movie the family is very tense, and doesnt seem to be super close with each other, but at the end of the film they seem like they are happy to be in eachothers presence. As well as the fact that they are going on a road trip to California for a beauty pageant.

While there are some point in the film where theres more action like pushing the van and getting everyone inside. but the main mood of this movie is a mixture of sadness and humour, like the jokes the grandfather makes and when the fmaily was on stage at the end of the movie. but there are also parts where its pretty depressing, like in the beginning seeing their uncle get out of the mental hospital and their grandfather dying

We see that pretty much during all of the film, the family doesnt seem to like eachother at the start, Dwayne even took a vow of silence because he didnt want to talk to his family. At the end of the film, we notice that theyre a lot closer, Dwayne even going on stage with olive, something he wouldnt do at the start for sure. There are a lot of tragic moments in this film as well, like when Dwayne found out he was colorblind. But there are comedic elements to this film like the scene where they got pulled over

In little miss sunshine we see a lot of switching back and forth between the good and bad parts of the film. For example, there was the conversation that their grandpa was having with Dwayne, but then a couple of minutes later hes finding out hes colorblind and cant fly jets, which is his dream job. As well as just bringing their uncle back from the mental hospital, but their grandfather is cursing about chicken.

The director uses both genres of tragicomedy and roatrip to give the message that winning isnt the most important thing. During a roadtrip AND tragicomedy film, we would see a bunch of conflicts as well as good moments that bring the family together, noticing that before the roadtrip the family wasnt as happy because they were so focused on winning no matter what it was. But after all of the things they went through together they seemed way happier at the end, after realizing winning isnt as important as they think it is.
