History of Irish culture in the United States.

When the Irish came to America during the Famine years, they populated Boston, Massachusetts and New York. U.S. immigration records states that by 1850, the Irish made up 43 percent of the foreign-born population, and New York had more Irish born citizens than Dublin. The Irish were unwanted and discriminated when they first arrived in America. Back home in Ireland they were known for their honesty and law-abiding manners, but in America they were stereotyped as drunks and fighters. After the Civil War, Irish laborers provided the work needed for the industrializing America. They took jobs in factories, built railroads in the west, and worked in the mines. The Irish organized the first trade union and conducted strikes for higher wages, shorter hours, and safer working conditions.

One traditional method of the Irish culture is to use the butts of candles and raw potatoes to cure burns. They tied mint around their wrists to treat stomach disorders, and it was believed to ward of infection and disease. The Irish also believed that a sick persons bed should face north to south and not to the east and west. For more traditional healing methods check out the link below!

The health issues of the Irish is influenced by old age, pollution, stress, excessive use of tobacco and alcohol, overly-rich diet, economic problems, and personal relationships. The main cause of death is heart disease due to an overly-rich diet with high fat and caloric intake. Irish also have an above-average rate of metal health disease. The rate of alcoholism is high among the Irish as well, since it is more of a social activity which relates back to the Irish culture.

How healthcare professionals interact with the Irish

The HSE provides expecting mothers with free services for the duration of the pregnancy, and up to six weeks after birth. In my opinion this allows heathcare professionals to better connect with, treat, and educate expecting mothers. The Irish are well known for the indulgence of the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol and drugs may become abused. The HSE provides services to treat people with them addictions. Likewise, the HSE also provides services for people suffering from mental heath problems. The access to the services provided by the HSE allows heathcare professionals to treat all aspects of the patient: physical, mental, and social.

Healthcare in Ireland

The healthcare system in Ireland consists of both a private and public sector. The public sector, known as Health Service Executive (HSE), is available to citizens who qualify based on financial need. Roughly a third of the population falls under the public sector. These citizens are able to apply for a medical card that will pay for visits to a General Practitioner, emergency room visits, and prescription medicines among other services. The medical card also provides cardholders with a cash grant on the birth of each child, and certain dental, eye, and ear services. The remaining population (roughly two-thirds) belong to the private sector, although some health services are provided to all citizens regardless of income. Unlike members of the HSE (public sector), these citizens have to pay for their own additional coverage from a private company. Most notably, the Irish healthcare system differs from the United States' healthcare system in that all people who suffer from long-term illnesses are entitled to a medical card that will pay for their treatments. Additionally, there are three different types of hospitals that make up the Irish healthcare system. There are HSE hospitals (public sector), private hospitals, and voluntary hospitals. For more information on the Irish healthcare system, see the link below.
