Mayra Fernandez is trying to convey her connection to her roots as a coping mechanism. She feels powerless and vulnerable stuck in lockdown and restricted by the pandemic. Mayra wants to do what she can to feel closer to her home country, "It was my way of ‘traveling’ to Guatemala while being unable to do so. Looking at it now, it feels like an anchor. (Fernandez). The work shows that art can free people and inspire hope from a difficult situation.

"El Cadejo" is an acrylic painting on canvas created by 67-year old Mayra Fernandez. It depicts her interpretation of a black dog with burning red eyes that is a part of Guatemalan folklore. El Cadejo protects drunkards who have fallen asleep on the streets. The scary yet protective portrayal of the dog was her way of expressing the feelings of frustration and home-sickness the lockdown has caused.

I chose this particular work of art as it incorporates aspects of the global pandemic that I will never experience. This is being stuck somewhere that doesn't feel like home. Although the lockdown and everything it's brought with it has been a burden to everyone, most people (like myself) are living through it at home. I've never thought about what it would feel like to be almost trapped in a place or country that is unfamiliar. Even for those that are stuck somewhere they're comfortable, homesickness will eventually set in. I think Fernandez's use of art during a crisis to maintain a positive mindset is a great example of how modern art is directly related to current events.
