Name: Shelby Hood Date: 11/1/16
Student #: 8 Class Period: 3rd
Name of Article: Taking SSRI Antidepressants during pregnancy more than doubles autism risk, study finds
Source and Date of Article: www.naturalnews.com December 17, 2015
What did you find interesting about this article? I found this article interesting because I did not know that antidepressants had any affect on an unborn child if they are taken during their mothers pregnancy.
Why is this information important to society? This information is important for people to know because it could reduce the number of people who take this medication during pregnancy, which would also reduce the number of children born with autism.
What HCW'S are involved or impacted by this information? The HCW's that are involved or impacted by this would be the doctors that prescribe antidepressants to pregnant women.
Summary of the article:
While vaccines, pesticides, and other industrial contaminants have been proved to be the cause of autism, recent studies have shown that mothers taking antidepressants during pregnancy is another cause of autism in unborn children. In 2013, one out of 88 children developed autism. in just two years this number increased by 30%, as well as the number of women taking antidepressants during pregnancy. The most common antidepressant that has been proved to cause autism is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Many will agree that depression isn't good during pregnancy for neither the mother or the baby, which is why there are other options to treat depression rather than medication. These alternatives include exercise, healthy eating, meditation and spending time with nature. Any busy work will decrease the feeling of depression, which is especially important for a pregnant woman.
Interesting article. The summary needs to be at least 2 paragraphs, so you will need to add more details. Very proud of you Keep up the great work !!

A slight injury could cause you to bleed out. The gene for Hemophilia is on the x chromosome so the father can't pass the trait down. People who have Hemophilia often bleed longer than other people. The main medical treatment for hemophilia is concentrated FV111 product called clotting factor or simply factor. After you use clotting factor you want to take Aminocaproic acid. Aminocaproic acid helps prevent blood clots from breaking down. There is approximentally 60% of cases with severe cases of hemophilia. There's 15% of cases with moderate hemophilia and 25% of cases with mild hemophilia. With many cases of mild hemophilia the genetic disease is not diagnosed until an injury. With moderate cases of hemophilia people tend to have episodes of bleeding. Then finally with severe cases of hemophilia tend to have frequent bleeding episodes and most bleeds happen in their joints and muscles.

Interesting article.

WebMD May 22 2016

What I found interesting about this article is how scoliosis is developed in a person and how they deal with it.
The information is important to society so that they know how to deal with it if a loved one ends up getting it.
Some HCW's that are involved in this is back surgeons and scoliosis specialist.
SUMMARY

Scoliosis is, in a normally straight spine, a curvature. The pine will show a slight or mild roundness and a degree of swayback when viewed from the side. If a person is viewed in the front or back and they don't have have scoliosis then the spine will appear to be straight, however, the sine will appear to be curved if the person does have scoliosis. there are two types of scoliosis, Idopathic scoliosis, which is the most common type of scoliosis, and Degenerative scoliosis. This may result from previous major back surgery, Osteoporosis, or a traumatic injury injury or illness.

About 2% to 3% of Americans at age 16 have scoliosis and less than 0.1% have spinal curves that measure greater than 40 degrees. Scoliosis is mostly detected at school screening exams or by a parent. Most adolesents with scoliosis that is significant with no known cause are observed for every four to six months. Those that have a spinal curvature beyond 40 degrees oftine considered for scoliosis surgery, whose goal is to make sure the curve does not get worse, but is does not perfectly straighten the spine. Although not many people get scoliosis, it is still pretty serious and can result in being crippled for the rest of your life if nothing is done about it early in it's development

Instructor Comments: Interesting article with great details!
Good work- keep it up, very proud of you!!!

Today 9 out of 10 people get lung cancer from smoking. Lung Cancer is the top cause of death to men and women. Prior to the widespread use of mechanical rollers, lung cancer was rare. Also some jobs make lung cancer more likely. Like people who work in Uranium, Arsenic, and other chemical should try to limit there exposure. Some symptoms that are common to lung cancer are coughing wont go away, wheezing , shortness of breath, chest pain when breathing in deeply, and fatigue. There are two man type of cell for lung cancer they are small - cell and non small - cell. Small - cell lung cancer is more aggressive and could spread quickly to other parts of your body early in the disease. The non small - cell lung cancer grows more slowly and is more common. It's responsible for almost 85% of all lung cancer.

Great article and great work - very proud of you !!!

All healthcare workers that are working in finding a cure for and treating this disease are impacted by this information. The more they know about it, the closer they are to curing it.
Tay-Sachs is a rare inherited disorder that destroys neurons in the brain and spinal chord, and infants with this disorder appear normal until 3-6 months. Affected infants lose motor skills and develop extreme sensitivity to loud noises. As the disease progresses, children experience seizures, vision and hearing loss, intellectual disability, and paralysis. A sign of this disease is an eye abnormality called a cherry-red spot, and can be found through an eye examination. Children with severe infantile form of Tay-Sachs usually only live to their early childhood.

Instructor Comment: Interesting article.

C.O.P.D (web med)
C.O.P.D is known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , this disease is caused by smoking . What I find interesting about this article is that c.o.p.d is often a mix of two diseases known as Chronic bronchitis and Emphysema . This information is important to society because not only does it effect you but everyone around you . Since C.O.P.D is a disease caused by smoking it can cause the people in your home to second hand smoke . It is also important because once the damage is done to your lungs there is no undoing the harm , all that person can do is prevent causing anymore damage . HCW are involved and impacted by this information because its there job to inform the patient on the reasons why they were diagnosed with C.O.P.D , and how to prevent more damage . The article on web med mostly states that C.O.P.D is a lung disease that makes it hard to breath and is caused by smoking . The symptoms for C.O.P.D are a long lasting cough , mucus that comes up with cough , and shortness of breath when u exercise . The article also states the causes of C.O.P.D which are smoking , breathing in chemical fumes such as , dust , and air pollution , also seriouse lung infections as a child . All these things causes C.O.P.D.

Intersting article. Great work- very proud of you!! Make sure to correct spelling errors.

I found this topic interesting because I have seen the affects of this disease and what it can do to people. This information is important to our society because it effects many people all around the world. Many HCW impact and are impacted by this information daily. Some HCW are the people who work in the cardiac unit, because they come in contact with heart disease every day. They have to try and understand what the patient is going through, and how to deal with it medically in.
This disease includes multiple problems that most likely will lead up to what is called atherosclerosis. This condition causes plaque to build up in the walls of the arteries. Over time this plaque narrows the arteries which makes it difficult for the blood to flow. This could also cause blood clots that can cause heart attacks or a stroke. Heart attacks occur when the blood flow is not pumping properly to the heart, which is cause by blood clots. Normally a person will survive there first heart attack, and have many more years of a proactive life. Strokes are also caused by blood clots. Ischemic stroke is when a blood vessel that gives the brain blood gets blocked. This could cause inability to walk or talk. Another common stroke is hermorrhagic stroke. This happens when the vassels in the brain burst. This is mainly caused because of incontrolled hypertension.
Interesting article. Make sure you correct your spelling errors.

What I found interesting in the article was that even though a child doesn't suffer a concussion, he could still have changes in his brain. This information is important to society because it shows the parents of the kid playing football what the sport does to their child's brain. A couple heathcare workers that are involved are Dr. Christopher Whitlow: Chief of neuroradiology at wake forest. Dr. Cristopher Giza: Director of the Tisch BrainSport Program and Professor of Pediatric and neurology at Cal University. In the article "Brain changes seen in kids after 1 football season" Dennis Thompson talks about how even though a child may not suffer a major head injury like a concussion, they could still have brain changes. Thompson goes into further detail explaining that these changes could impact the child's life in the future or it may not even effect the child at all. All the information isn't there yet. The researchers only know that the brain goes through changes throughout a football season. Research also shows that the more hits a kid takes in the head, the more likely these changes will occur. Researchers got this information by having 25 kids that are playing football take a MRI at the beginning of the season then take another MRI at the end of the season. The two results were compared. The brain after the season had changes to it's white matter. In the end, it's obvious that something is going on with the brain, but researchers are still not sure that these effects are that serious.
Instructor Comments: Interesting and well written article !

This is important to society because at first the tumor and the symptoms cannot be detected. Some of the HCWs that deal with lab and imaging tests are an MRI and CT technician. They are slow at growing, which means they are harder to spot. It is also harder to spot because the symptoms cannot be detected at first. But the doctor will do a physical exam and ask questions.
The doctor will run many different tests to determine your diagnosis. Lab tests check for things that your tumor releases. Imaging tests let the doctor see the tumor inside your body. The computed tomography(CT) can detect tumors and show if they have spread to any other organs. After the results show you have a cancerous NET, the doctor will give your disease a grade and stage. The doctor will then use all the information gathered to find the best treatment.
Interesting article - keep up the great work, proud of you !!

Every baby deserves to start a healthy start in life!
What HCW's are involved, or impacted by this information?
The HCW's that are involved would be neonatal nurses, pediatricians, a pedriatician nurse, and pediatric physical therapists.
Summary:
In 2015, the rate of premature births increased among certain races and ethnical groups for the first time in 8 years. Premature births are the births occured before the 37th week of pregnancy. As reported by the data from the U.S National Center for Health Statistics, the overall rate rose from 9.57 percent to 9.63 percent. The rate of African American women was approximately 48 percent higher than American Indian/ American native, which was 15 percent. Why is it important to society? This article could help people with diabetes better understand their condition or people who are just curious about it and want to know more. What HCW's are involved, or impacted by this information? The main HCW's involved or impacted are your nurse educator, registered dietitian, endocrinologist and podiatrist. Summary: Diabetes is a chronic condition, resulting in abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood stream. People with diabetes either don't produce enough insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed daily, or cant they may not be able to use the insulin their body produces. diabetes is a major cause of death in the United States. symptoms of type1 diabetes include increased thirst, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fatigue. Type 2 diabetes symptoms include numbness or burning in the hands, feet or legs, blurred or poor vision, fatigue and poor wound healing.
To diagnose this condition the doctors will run random plasma glucose level, fasting plasma glucose level and oral glucose tolerance level test. people with diabetes sometimes have to take insulin shots twice a day and self monitor blood sugar by checking the glucose content of a drop of blood
Instructor Comments: Interesting and well written article.

What did you find interesting about this article?
The thing I found interesting about this article is that the first sign of MS is different for children. The disease could possibly start after a child has a nerve disorder.
Why is this information important to society?
This information is important to society because once a child has a nerve disorder you would know to get your child checked for multiple sclerosis because that would be a symptom.

What HCW's are involved, or impacted by this information?

The HCW's that are involved with patients that have MS are a nurse, physiatrist, neurologist, physical therapist and more.
Summary: The author of this article is Neil Lava and it explains, that Multiple Sclerosis is a disease adults often get but doctors have started to diagnose children under the age of 18 with MS. Children have different symptoms for this disease from adults. Children symptoms may start after the child has a nerve disorder which is also called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). They may get sick with a fever or headaches and that could takes weeks for them to recover and get their energy back. There are a lot of children that have not been diagnosed with MS. Adults that have MS get worse quicker than a child would with this disease. Children that have MS makes it harder for them to think and their emotions may mess up their relationship with their classmates. Some children can have a physical disability because of this disease.
Some common symptoms in children with MS are weakness, problems with walking, muscle spasms and more. These symptoms are similar to adult symptoms with MS. Children may take longer to recover from their low days. It could take kids weeks to recover from their sick days. There is not a cure for children with the disease but treatments could make things easier. The treatment goal for MS in children is to prevent future attacks and to minimize the symptoms. Medications for children with MS are Interferon beta-1a, Interferon beta-1b, and Glatiramer acetate. These medications are given to children by injection in the muscle or under the skin. A treatment called corticosteroid medications reduce inflammation and it causes side effects but most children can handle the medication. Treatments such as physical and occupational therapy could help children with MS.
Instructor Comments: Interesting article! Great job.

This is important to society because if people don't know much about their blood sugar and they read this article they will learn they need to eat their meals or face the consequences.
+What HCW's are involved, or impacted by this information? HCW's (such as doctors or pediatricians) are involved because they can use blood sugar to do a test on someone called the "Fasting Plasma Glucose Test'' to find out if someone has diabetes.
+Summary: This article talks about Blood sugar is an important role in the human life. Blood sugar is crazy important cause if too high or too low it could possibly lead to death. Healthcare workers can do a blood sugar test to determine if someone has diabetes. If one has diabetes they have to prick their finger everyday multiple times a day to check their blood pressure. people with diabetes are more likely to pass out from blood sugar vs. someone with out diabetes but with blood sugar problems.

People with low blood sugar can tent to feel dizzy, light headed, or even nauseated.

What did you find interesting about this article?
This article was interesting to me because it is physically possible for a human to turn to "stone".
Why is this information helpful to society?
This information is helpful to society because it's important for us to know the symptoms and be informed about what is anatomically possible.
Who is involved?
Bone Specialist, especially, are involved in this disorder. However, this disorder is extremely rare, so there is not a specific HCW assigned to help these people.
http://www.stonemansyndrome.com/
Summary:
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP or Stone Man Syndrome) is a disorder where muscle tissue and connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments are gradually replaced by bone, forming bone outside the skeleton that constrains movement. When the fibrous tissue is damaged, it gets ossified. To be more specific, muscles are replaced by bones. Bones are formed as if there is an extra skeleton is formed other than the original skeleton. Formation of bones by replacing muscles restricts the movement of the person who is affected with this disorder. This disorder is only found in 1 in 2 million people in the world (only 700 people, half of which are found in the US).

In patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, the gene ACVR1 will get mutated. This gene provides instructions for the production of a certain protein known as BMP. This protein can be found in several body tissues like cartilage and skeletal muscles. It controls the development of muscles and bones. Replacement of cartilages into bones is known as ossification and it occurs as a normal process from birth to teenage. This results in the symptoms of stone man syndrome. In most cases, people without any history of this disorder in the family are affected with this disorder. Rarely, individuals will inherit the mutated gene from the parent.

Interesting article - Keep up the great work - very proud of you !!!

Instructor Comments: Interesting article and very well written !

Another reason that the author suggests keeping the baby in the womb longer is because it helps to protect the babies from danger in the uterine environment.
Studies to prove this theory were done and successful. The premature babies had lower volumes in certain parts of the brain compared to babies born full term.

•What did you find interesting about this article? What I found most interesting about this article is that almost all children get RSV by the time they are 2 years old.

•Why is this information important to society? When children or elders show symptoms of RSV parents or family members usually assume it's just a cold but when knowing this information, parents and family members can take caution that their child or relative might have something much more serious than a cold.

•What HCW's are involved, or impacted by this information? HCW that may work with RSV patients are pediatrician because mostly babies are affected, oncologist because cancer patients can also have a high risk of getting RSV but also doctors who work with HIV patients because of their low immune system they can catch RSV very easily.

Summary:
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a virus that acts much like a cold. It is easily transmitted through sneezing and coughing but you can also get it from touching surfaces with RSV and than rubbing your eyes or mouth, much like a cold. The symptoms are much like ones of a cold; such as, fever, running nose, and cough but also loss of appetite and wheezing.
Those most affected by RSV are premature babies, children younger than two, adults over 65, and patients with weak immune system such as HIV and cancer patients. Unfortunately there is currently no vaccine available to prevent RSV but as scientist continue to research the virus, they believe one will eventually be developed.
Until a vaccine is developed the best way to try to prevent RSV is wash your hands, keep your hands away from face, stay away from sick people, cover coughs and sneezes, clean and disinfect surfaces, and stay home when you are sick. Don't always assume a cold is just a cold and will go away in its own, particularly if you are in a higher risk group. If in doubt make sure and see your doctor in order to rule out the RSV virus.
Instructor Comments: Great article and very well written. This information is important to society because it shows what some people have to go through on a daily basis and to inform people who have been diagnosised with it. Healthcare workers aren't really involved unless the patient wants to do insulin therapy but mainly it's a by your self medicine. Basal insulin is hard to manage it makes a high rise in blood glucose level. It makes sure that your body cells are full of nutrients for energy. If you need basal insulin and didn't use it your body cells would starve and you would die. The body cells will start burning fat only and it causes production of acidic waste products. All this can cause DKA(Diabetic ketoacidosis). There are few was to use basal insulin such as NPH at nightime, glargine or determir once daily at nightime, or insulin pump therapy.
Can you explain DKA - most of your peers would not know what these initials stand for? This information is important to society because it can draw attention to the amount of caution African Americans should put into consideration when we make and eat the foods that we do, that can lead to strokes happening .

+ what HCW'S are involved, or impacted by this information ? Physical Therapists, Neurologists, etc

This article is basically talking about the affects of certain things that have a higher impact on African American women, and the things that can contribute to these women being the highest risk factor in having strokes. High Blood pressure is a major key factor in provoking strokes to occur. Another reason why African American Women have the highest risk of going through a stroke is the amounts of sodium we put into our bodies. Stress is another major factor in strokes occurring in African American women as well.

Another thing the article points out is that Sickle Cell Anemia is a disease that mostly occurs in African American Women, this disease can also lead to the occurrence of a stroke. Having a high cholesterol is another thing that puts African American Women in the lead of the occurrence of strokes. Cholesterol is one of the major issues that many African American Women face today alone, and has seemed to be a no going problem for a while now. The healthcare worker who is involved in this is called a cardiologist and nutritionist.
> Summary of Article <
In the article, " U.S. Deaths from Heart Disease, Cancer on the Rise" it gives us information about how heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death and it happens in a lot of grown ups. Although, heart disease is number one, cancer is right behind it and is still rising up, for example in between 2011 and 2014 cancer death rose by 2.6 percent. In this year, 2016, heart disease rate is coming down. In the article, a cardiovascular health researcher named Wayne Rosamond Ph.D. said that even though we think it is bad, he says that we should not overlook the "tremendous success story", about how heart diseases is going down.

Another important aspect of cancer and heart disease is that in 22 states, cancer is the leading cause of death. An important thing to know is that the CDC reported that Heart Disease was responsible for 167 deaths while cancer was close second at 161.2 deaths. Most of these cancers are caused by smoking and much more things. Heart Disease and cancer are the top 2 killers in America, for example in 2014 heart disease rate was at 614,348 deaths and cancer was at 591,699.
so to help your self not have heart disease or cancer keep your body healthy and clean.
Instructor Comments: Interesting Article. I found this article interesting because I am interested in the future to work in the neonatal department of the hospital and I'd like to know new things about how women go through childbirth labor and how it affects them when choosing a type of birth technique.
2.) This information is important for society because when a woman goes into labor it is very important for them to realize and be aware of the decisions they make could potentially affect the baby and themselves.
3.) The HCW's that are impacted d by this information are Neonatal Doctors, Nurses, Surgeons, and Anesthesiologists in the Neonatal Department.
Since the beginning of times, women who are expecting have had their baby the natural way. Technology and medicine were not in use for pain and contractions during the time of going into labor. Now that the invention of cesarean section has come into play, preganant women have took it as an advantage to avoid childbirth labor and pain. This is called a "Maternal Request". Which means choosing without and medical reason that could change the outcomes of surgery.
The main reason why they would choose this is because of "fear of childbirth labor". Tearing of the vagina and sexual dysfunction is another reason but pain is the main concern for women. Fewer than 3 in 100 women in the U.S. have requested a cesarean section for their fist time delivery. The healing process lasts twice as long compared to a vaginal delivery. Future complications could appear after the major abdominal surgery such as bladder damage, infection of the incision, and damage to other internal organs. Studies show that you will possibly have to return to the hospital for a repeat c-section if have had one in previous pregnancy. The only time when to have a c-section is in an emergency during vaginal delivery, baby is not face down in the birth canal or is having problems that could lead to a life and death situation. All the outcomes for a cesarean section outweighs the outcomes of a vaginal delivery. This is why pregnant women should always review the outcomes of choosing either type of birth technique with their doctor and think what is best for themselves and the baby.
Instructor Comments: interesting article. My question is exactly how many doctors are willing to do this procedure strictly on maternal request. Today, insurance companies will not cover a procedure that is not medically necessary.

Source and date of article: Ana Sandoi -
The article grabbed my interest because I've never had an energy drink personally, and have never trusted them, i want to inform those who drink them of the health risks and possible life threatening affects of drinking many energy drinks religiously.

This information is important to society and every body within it, due to the possible permanit damage these seemingly harmless drinks may cause. Informing those of the dangers of abusing these drinks can prevent possible health problems to keep people safe from something we may not know everything about.

Many healthcare workers can be affected by this, due to the wide area of affects this can cause, the drinks have been linked to heart attacks, sickness and a plethora of other side affects, while also involving possibly the most frightening affect being hepatitis C.
This would most likely affect any doctor or nurse who have a scope of practice that involves caring for young to elderly citizens,
No affect on those who study veterinarian practices, and may affect diatritions the most out of all.

Hunter- great job! I love your article choice -very interesting. I noticed that there are a couple of misspelled words. These words are underlined in red. Please correct this before submitting your final padlet. Also, a little confused about the mentioning of veterinarians and the detrimental effects of sports drinks - how does this relate to animals? And lets see if we can copy this post and put in the padlet assigned to your class so your classmates can comment on your article. Talk to me after class tomorrow. Very very proud of you :)
