During emergency remote teaching I used the breakout rooms in blackboard to encourage discussion among smaller groups of students. I also used the chat function and polls to get interaction especially when students were shy to speak.

Students sometimes set up groups for contact outside of the classroom using the preferred media of the day e.g. facebook groups, whatsapp, snapchat. They can also use zoom, teams and facetime to meet face to face.
