This cartoon shows African Americans having a good time. They are laughing, families together, the old man is sitting in a chair with a cane. A baby siting on the floor sucking on his thumb, Everybody is dressed well and dancing. They have smiles on their faces. Compared to the second cartoon where the mood of the cartoon is very sad and gloomy . This contrast is proof for the Southern slave-holders that African Americans are taken care of better as a slave then "wage slaves" working in the north. It supports their argument that the wage workers suffer, fall ill, live in polluted neighborhoods and are on their own, unlike the slaves.

This video begins with Frederick Douglass at six years old hiding in a closet on his first day being a slave. He is witnessing his aunt get beaten by her slave owner. The slave owner was violent and brutal whipping his aunt. Douglass was very frightened of what he just witnessed. This source shows the limitation of the southern argument that slavery is beneficial for slaves and America. It clearly shows that slaves were beaten and treated like animals. The slave owner dehumanized their slaves and felt entitled to do so. They took all their legal rights away. Slaves were not treated as human beings.

" I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."

This quote taken from Lincoln's First Inaugural Address directly challenges the southern argument that Lincoln will destroy the south and the institution of slavery because he himself is saying he has no intention to interfere with slavery. He makes it clear that he has no rights by law to interfere with the slavery that is already established in the south. His presidency is not based on ending the institution of slavery, but rather preventing the spread of slavery. Lincoln is not an abolitionist.

This cartoon shows a slave holding a newspaper after Lincoln is elected the President. It supports the southern argument that with Lincoln as president he will free all the slaves they will rise up in the south and destroy the southern economy. The slave is being called a 'monkey" which supports the south in saying that slaves are not humans capable of being free members of the southern society.

“We are Abolitionists from the North, come to take and release your slaves; our organization is large, and must succeed. I suffered much in Kansas, and expect to suffer here, in the cause of human freedom. Slaveholders I regard as robbers and murderers; and I have sworn to abolish slavery and liberate my fellow men.”

This quote supports the southern argument that Northern Abolitionists are dangerous radicals because John Brown himself is saying that he going to come in and release the slaves. They want the south to suffer because they have denied the slaves human freedoms. John Brown calls the slave holders robbers and murderers. John Brown stresses how much power the abolitionists have because their organization is very large. All of the northern abolitionists are determined to come in and free the slaves.

Its doctrine, of “no union with slaveholders,” carried out, dissolves the Union, and leaves the slaves and their masters to fight their own battles, in their own way. This I hold to be an abandonment of the great idea with which that Society started. It was started to free the slave, it ends by leaving the slave to free himself. It started with the purpose to imbue the heart of the nation with sentiments favorable to the abolition of slavery, and ends by seeking to free the North from all responsibility of slavery...

This quote is a direct argument against the southern opinion that northern abolitionist are dangerous radicals. Douglass was a slave himself who then got freed and went north and became an abolitionist, whose main goal was to free slaves and give them the rights every human living in America deserved. The slaves had the right to the same liberties as every other American. He did not believe in freeing the slaves through extreme violence like John Brown. Is shows the limitations of the southern argument that all abolitionists are violent radicals because Frederick Douglas proved time and again that he was not a radical. He used the constitution to support his efforts to free slaves. He went back to the law to support his cause not violence.
