This qoute is an example for identity deception in the play because it directly addresses the practice of “Bunburying.” Which is a practice used by Algernon, so he can escape social situations. This quote was said shortly after Gwendolen and Cecily found out that Ernest doesn’t exist.

This is another example of Self-Deception, of Lies and Betrayal. Cecily tells Algernon, who she thinks is Ernest, her cousin, that she was always forced to write his letters, addressed to herself, for him. Cecily is deceiving herself, because there has never been a cousin of hers named Ernest from whom she could receive letters (also Dramatic irony). Algernon is playing along with this deception and these lies.
