I think everyone has gone through a small version of participatory performance before if they have sang in the car along with the music playing. I used to be in concert band which is where I get my presentational performance experience from. We would play classical music and songs like Lassus Trambone which is more of a higher tempo song. The experience would usually have the crowd sitting in silence while we played and then they would wait until the end to clap or provide any sort of feedback. There was an occasion when we played "The Best of Journey" in which we played the song "Don't Stop Believen" and the crowd started singing along to it.
