In 1954 brown vs board of education passed a law declaring segregation in schools was illegal.The little rock 9 were the first African American students in a "all white school". This was not well received by the people in the area and they had to be protected by the police from constantly from attacks .

In 1955/2/21 black activist leader Malcolm x was assassinated while giving a speech . He was killed by a member of his former group the black Muslims .They felt he was taking the spotlight cause he had created his own competing group

They were peaceful protesters , protesting the killing of Black civil rights activist Jimmie Lee Jackson to help the passing of the 15th amendment . The police beat the protesters as they refused to back down .many were injured .

During the civil rights movement some black and white activist took a bus tour to the south to protest.they were constantly under attack from both people and police officers. they were often arrested for what they believed ow ever there struggles did not go to waist as in 1961 "the Kennedy administration, the Interstate Commerce Commission issued regulations prohibiting segregation in interstate transit terminals".

Many civil rights leaders including Dr.king him self watched as Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.The law helped solidify equal employment for all, limited the use of voter literacy tests and allowed federal authorities to ensure public facilities were integrated.

After voting was prevented from being segregated many people tried to prevent the African Americans from voting.President Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 into law. it prevented people from stopping them with jail time .This was the first major civil rights act .

Several days after MLKs assassination . this act was passed to stopall discrimination in housing . it was the last act passed during the civil rights era.
