Gideon was charged in Florida for breaking and entering. He appeared in court with no lawyer so he requested one. Gideon was told by the state of Florida that they couldn't give him a lawyer because they claimed that lawyers can only be appointed for indigent defendants in capital cases so, Gideon represented himself. He was found guilty and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Gideon filed a Habeas Corpus arguing that the court's decision violated his right to be represented by counsel. The Florida supreme court denied his habeas corpus relief.

There could be many effects if you don't have an attorney. For example you might be sentenced or charged for something you didn't do and no one can defend you. The court also discovered that in order to have a fair trail all defendants must have an attorney as a fundamental right even in felony cases, and if they can't afford one, one will be provided.
