Gideon was told by the state of Florida that they couldn't give him a lawyer because they claimed that lawyers can only be appointed for indigent defendants in capital cases so, Gideon represented himself. He was found guilty and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Gideon filed a Habeas Corpus arguing that the court's decision violated his right to be represented by counsel. The Florida supreme court denied his habeas corpus relief.
