Keep these in mind as our community experiences the semester together[1]:

1. Your ability to appropriately self-disclose. “We teach who we are” (Palmer, 2007) Similarly, “Research is mesearch.” How does your positionality impact your reflexivity? One risk you are being asked to take is to show who you really are to the other people in the course. You are being asked to talk about what it feels like to be you, to show your joy, your hurt, your warmth, in other words, to try to be real and congruent. However, you are not asked to reveal necessarily your past life or darkest secrets; it is just as important for you to feel safe and comfortable in self-disclosure. Self-disclosure should invite contact with others so that they will be involved with you.

2. Your ability to listen and show empathy. Most often we do not really listen to each other, and even when we listen, we do not try to feel what it is like to be the other person. Your ability to listen and develop empathy for others is an essential dimension of the healing process.

Your investment in the group. Do you actively participate in developing relationships in the group? You cannot remain silent for a large portion of each session and expect to receive a top grade for this class.

4. Your ability to give and receive concrete feedback. Feedback is a difficult relational skill that takes practice. You will receive some guidelines on how to give concrete and constructive feedback to members of the course.

Your involvement with the assigned readings, including coming to class prepared to discuss assigned readings. Readings should be completed before the class in which they are listed. Writing reflections on the readings as the minimum for interactive reading. Be sure to practice note-taking and record “citeable notes” (Single, 2009)

6. Your on-time attendance to the class session with cameras on.
