The narrator comments on how his relatives have changed with age, as he has too. The "wrinkles" show that time has passed since the son last saw his mother. The wrinkles also illustrates that the mother is aging and the inevitability of mortality is near. This shows that time is moving forward. As the "flour makes her over" it shows us that the flour is transforming her appearance, making her look younger because it brings heers back his memories with his mother in the kitchen when he was a child. This shows that death is nearing as time passes.

The auditory image in the final stanza ends the poem with a lasting image of aging. The grandfather "pours the wine" and he repeatedly shivers hitting the glass with the bottle causing a tingle everytime. The poet says the "tune plays faster each year" which shows he's aging and constantly getting weaker. He refers to the noise of the bottle hitting the glass as a tune which causes the man to question whether or not, his grandfather will be doing the same thing next year; if he will still be alive by then.

The seasonal reference implies that the family have a yearly routine, "Up to his elbows in hedge, he works on a hole that reappears every Winter", the implication shows that time passes fast and the family gatherings are consistent to sustain the bond. The quote also references the power of nature and how it never ages, while in contrast, man age and time affects the human being but it hasn't affected the family bond that is so everlasting.

Sheer's use of present tense lends to poem an observational tone. In stanza 2, "Dad still goes and soaks himself in the rain" suggests the observational tone because the child is observing the dad doing the same thing ever year since he was young, which also displays time passing and his father ageing. The word 'still' indicates that it is a continuous activity, which is also happening in the present, as well as the past. In stanza 3, "it is a tune he plays faster each year"
