I started elementary school in 2007 and I remember one of the first interactions with technology was the school computer when we would go down to the computer lab and learn how to type, play educational games or did filling out book surveys. During the 2000s, computer were still seen as luxury items and my family didn't get until 2017.

In 2015, the state of Arizona got rid of the paper versions of its end-of-the-year standardized tests and began to use the AzMerit test online. Gone were the days of having to make sure you had the right No.2 pencils and fill in the holes completely. This experience made things easy as it required a log in and once you were done you could go back to the classroom and not have to wait until everyone was finished.

In 2020, I was in my senior year when the coronavirus pandemic started and they had to shut down the school for the remainder of that school year. I remembered that we had to use zoom in order to connect with our classes. I also went to EVIT and we had to use zoom in order to pass the class. I do not use Zoom anymore for my class but it did introduce me to video conferences not only for my education but job situations.

The pencil

I noticed that the last 10 years have been a giant leap for technology in the classroom. But the greatest item that changed education was the mass production of the pencil (1900) which replaced the feather and ink. It will seem weird but in those days of the Victorian Era, it was difficult for children of lower income to even afford ink and paper. The mass production of the pencil made the pencil cheap and helped bring more children into the classroom instead of the factories.

My dad went to school in Mexico and he told me it was different. You were lucky to have a pencil and paper with you. He said that there was technology such as a typewriter and the camera and that was it. Everything was done on a chalkboard, reading and using posters. My dad told me that he didn't like school in general because he found it boring and prefer to help my granddad or be with his friends. My dad emphasized that he loves reading about anything and it was no different in the 1970s.

My brother went to school in Mexico and the U.S. He had a similar experience as my dad in the 1970s except there was more technology such as overhead projectors and VHS. When he moved to California, he was amazed by the upgrade in technology. At his new American school, they had computers in which they made use of their schoolwork. Such as typing classes, classroom games, and how to explore the internet. He said that at the time he had no problem except now, due to the internet taking so long to boot up. In the 90s, we still used textbooks and the chalkboard was still used 90% of the time. He told me it was the same experience in high school except the computer started becoming intertwined with schoolwork such as research papers and typing.

My friend Tea went to an online high school when he lived in Indiana. He told me that they gave him a laptop in order for him to be successful in his online classes. He liked the whole idea have spending most of his school time at home and only having to visit the on-site school building for a couple of hours. What he didn't like is that he was lonely and didn't like being stuck at home. They started incorporating online classes at this point and he was early on to be able to get an education purely online.
