Men from the 82nd airborne division parachuted from high grounds. Many men were instructed to make combat jumps and fewer than 3,000 paratroopers made over 4 jumps. In the spring of 1943, the 82nd All Americans conducted the invasion of Sicily. Next, they moved onto Salerno, then moved to England to prepare for the assault on Western Europe. They were among the first soldiers to fight in Normandy, France which began the biggest airborne assault in history. The 82nd Airborne division was well trained and successful in their missions.

The unit was given the nickname “All American” which is the basis for its “AA” shoulder patch. The nickname was All American because the initial members came from all over the country. Most other divisions had men from 4 or 5 states however the 82nd airborne division had men from over 40 different states.

Sergeant Alvin C York who was one of the most decorated soldiers of WW1. He was a successful leader because of his successful past experience in WW1 that influenced how he trained the men in the 82nd airborne division. Because the men in that division were so well trained by Sgt York, they moved from infantry to an airborne division.

General James M. Gavin aka “jumping Jim” was also a successful leader of the 82nd airborne division. Gavin worked a lot with paratroopers which is what gave him that nickname.

Even today, the 82nd Airborne Division has outstanding leaders such as Army Sgt. Monica Lin Brown. Brown was the first female Afghan War veteran and the second woman since WWII to receive the Silver Star. Brown, also the 2008 USO Soldier of the Year, was still in her teens when she received the honor for heroic actions she took in 2007.
