The situational irony in Donald Glover’s (Childish Gambino) song/video “ This Is America” is the joyous gospel feel and its heavy trap beats, while displaying the horrific realities in America. The irony of Donald and the kids dancing joyfully to introduce us/showcase the violence going on in America. Without Donald and the school kids dancing no one would actually question the violence, rioting etc going on in the around them. They would just accept it because violence has become normalized in america. The dancing adds a shock value so we have an actual response or reaction to the violence. He uses joyful music, energizes dancing to make us notice the harshness going on around him. When something joyous and Energetic is going on it’s easier to notice the bad and violence because of the distinct difference between the two. The irony of using joyous gospel music, energetic dancing , and heavy trap beats, to bring attention to the chaos. Before he would shoot someone the joyful gospel music would play and while he’s actually doing the shooting the music transitions into the heavy trap, to show the magnitude of what’s transpiring.
