LSD falls under the hallucinogenic group of drugs. It has no medical use, and has a high abuse potential, but is not addictive. For these reasons it is a schedule 1 drug, which means it is illegal to possess, sell, and consume. It is considered "semi-synthetic" because it's ingredients are found in nature but LSD cannot be produced naturally.

LSD is considered the most potent and most widely used of the hallucinogenic group. LSD is considered an indole hallucinogen, and has similar structure to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It comes from ergot, a brown and toxic mold that grows on rye and other grains. LSD can only be produced in a laboratory. It is often distributed on blotter paper that has been soaked in the acid, with cartoon decals on the paper. However, it can be taken in pill form, and even absorbed through the eyes, though these methods are not very common

LSD was first synthesized in a lab at Sandoz Pharmaceutical Company in Switzerland, by scientist Dr. Albert Hofmann. The company was trying to produce useful medicines for ailments such as headaches. Some of these compounds did have medical uses, such as methyser-gide, for the treatment of migraine headaches. However in 1943, Hofmann produced LSD-25 (the 25th compound in the series of ergot derivatives and what is know as LSD today) and accidentally absorbed a mild amount in his fingers and experienced hallucinations. Afterwards, he deliberately took more to see if it would produce the same effects

Sandoz introduced LSD commercially under the trademarked Delysid. It was thought that LSD could treat all sorts of psychological ailments. In the United States, it was restricted for scientific and medical use only. In 1951, the Central Intelligence Agency researched the properties of LSD and its potential in being used as a truth serum and tested the effects on human subjects, and was used in 1953 during Operation MK-ULTRA. Also during the mid 1950's, Dr. Oscar Janigar, a psychiatrist in the Los Angeles area opened an "LSD salon" where he continued his research on the effects of LSD.
In the mid-60's, the CIA pulled their funding for the research projects, and with that, the supply of LSD for researchers. Black markets for LSD started so research could be continued in secret. Augustus Owsley Stanley III (or Owsley) was one of the main suppliers of LSD that circulated in the US. As most LSD markets were centered in the San Francisco/Los Angeles area, it gained a reputation and was known as the "City of Love". The "Flower Power" movement of the sixties was largely due to the circulation of LSD.
In 1967, LSD was deemed to be dangerous and was an illegal substance. After this usage died down until about 1980, when "rave culture" hit the US. LSD was a popular drug used at clubs and raves due to its effects. However usage of LSD died down again in the late 90's as rave culture slowed down.

The effects of LSD vary, but LSD will cause users to have a "trip" in which their senses are altered and may hallucinate, including images, sounds, and sensations that do not really exist. Those who take LSD often use it as an escape from reality or just for the feeling, as many report feeling overstimulated. However, the effects of LSD are not always good. Users can sometimes have a "bad trip" in which they experience paranoia and anxiety. LSD also severely impairs judgement, and has caused injury and death in some users since they feel like they will never return to normal and they're losing their minds. Results of consuming LSD are very unpredictable but do rely on their previous drug experience, expectations, setting, as well as the neurological effects of the drug.
