Introduction

TED TALK (using visual literacy as mentor text and a hook). Think about how powerful it would be to "read" this video (this is digital literacy, my friends). Then, have students look at the transcript and analyze how she organized this speech. What VOCABULARY did she use as strong word choice? They are READING and WRITING and LISTENING AND SPEAKING by talking to one another. This ONE activity has ALL the literacy elements to it.

What about MOTIVATION? Is it important? How can you work to motivate students? This is one tool I used. I made sure to kidwatch and really notice what students were contributing. I would write them letters at night and place this on their desks in the morning. Keep track of who receives one to try and reach all 160 of them!

#6 Teaching your content using YOUR discipline's lens. First, make a list of all the literacy demands your students will have to face when learning your content. Then, You will be broken up by your content areas. Read the article which is closest to your content. Talk to your classmates about what you might have NOT considered about demands. Add these to your list.
