S.E. Hinton develops a theme through the setting because of where she put the characters to live. She put the main character to live in the east of Tulsa, Oklahoma which is the rough side of the town, where people have to grow up fast, and where street smarts are more valuable than book smarts. She was also able to develop a theme through the characters because of Darry and Dally. Darry was able to provide/benefit to the theme of the novel because of his life, he was born in New York but didn't have a family to take care of him so he had to grow up quickly (loose his innocence) in order to survive as a young kid in the real world. He was involved in multiple things, he even went to jail at the age of 8. Dally also is able to prove the theme because he had to grow up quickly after both of his parents died to be able to take care of his two younger brothers. He wasn't able to go to college, even though he could've because he had to be able to pay for the things his family needed which meant he had to work not one but two jobs in order to make ends meet.
