My mom and grandfather have been the two of the most influential people in my life, besides God. I was taught that family are suppose support one another, trust one another, and depend one another. Without family, I would not be where I’m at. I was raised by a single-mother. My parents divorced when I was five years old. My father was not in my life, so my grandfather was my father figure. He set an example of what a man, husband, and father should be. My mother showed me the strength, couragousness, tenancity, determination, will, drive power, love, kindness, and care that women possess within. She worked two sometimes three jobs to take care of myself and my two older siblings. She instilled in us those same qualities, but most important she made sure to always stress the ideas getting education as a means to improve ourselves and gain knowlegde that no one could take away. She fought and sarcficed to ake sure none of us became a statistic. The statistics that creates a stereotype of black children ending up dropping out of class; girls getting pregnant; boys joining gangs, selling drug, and/or being in jail if they are raised by a single black mother.

Being a black takes endurance, patience, willingness to continue to strive for greatness and its an everyday battle against systematic racism. These values and life experiences will be helpful for me to connect with students from different backgrounds. The common theme in the educational experience of minorities is the lack of diversity of who is teaching them. The classrooms are more diverse than ever, but people of color are rarely in front of the class teaching. In my educational experience, I did not have a black teacher until my 11th grade U.S. History teacher. Her name was Ms. Allen and she opened my eyes to the importance of history as well as inspired me to become a history teacher. If students can see themselves in positions of change in society, such as teachers, this could awaken something in them to want to create goals and strive to achieve them.

I have always been poor. My mom was a single mother who worked three jobs to take care of me and my two older siblings. My parents did not go to college. They were both in the military. My mom always stressed the importance of education and how beneficial getting educated can be. Throughout my adulthood my mom and I have been in and out of homelessness. We are currently living in transitional housing. We have not had a stable place to stay since my mom lose her house in 2007. I spent my college years in shelters and taking multiple buses to get to school. I know how hard it is to be homeless as an adult and going to college. I can not imagine how it feels for a child or teen to be homeless.

I have a learning disability. I have problems with reading comphension, and short term memory. I am a visual learner. History was a subject that I connected with because I could see the timeline of humankind through the stories and events of the world. What may have happened 50 years ago, still effects our lives today. Understand those concepts are easy through primary sources such as documents, photographs, artifacts; and their our documentaries the showcase history. Research is the fun part, writing was the worst part of history for me. I have a hard time putting my thought on paper or in forming essays. Powerpoints are great tool for me to use because it’s not too much writing plus I can add visual aides.

In the Supplemental reading of Chapter 8 Today's Students there are statistics of today's households such as, married couples made up less than 50 percent of U.S. households in 2014, down from 71 percent in 1970. During the same period, nontraditional households increased from 29 percent in 1970 to over 50 percent. (Pg 267). Thus, more students are raised in single-parent homes. Educators, like myself, have to be understanding of the stresses which come with being raised in household with one parent. Students may have the extra responsibility of helping their parent with younger siblings, or getting a job to bring income into their household. I will have to flexible with my student(s) who have to balance their responsibilities at home and at school. I will start by having a conversation with the student(s) and their parent(s) about what can be done to ensure the student(s) in successful in class, whether it's tutoring, extended time on assignments or giving both the student(s) and their parent(s) resources they can apply for to help ease the hardship.

Students are not interested in learning about white heroes and historical figures. They are shown and told by society all day, everyday how people of color have not contributed to America or the world. It is the teachers responsibility to not impose the systematic racism within the curriculum.
