We learned that oil helps to make birds' feathers waterproof. This is because oil is hydrophobic. We did an experiment to investigate this and to observe how substances of different densities react in water. We started with a glass half filled with water, then we added oil and noticed that the oil sat on top of the water, next we added a few drops of food colouring so that we could see what was about to happen in the glass. Finally, we added salt and watched it create a lot of movement in the glass.
