Mr. Thompson sees Mr. Helton as a good man that only deserves the best, as that is how he treated the farm. Yet no one, including Mr. Thompson himself, his wife, or his kids, really view Mr. Thompson as being completely innocent. Although the court ruled him as innocent, Mr. Thomspon senses that the juries and judge, while agreeing with him in formality, don't believe him and instead despise him in reality.
