Cole was abused and ignored/neglected. His dad beat him after drinking and his mom drank to ignore it. He learned from that so he beat up Peter Driscal after Peter did the right thing. Peter was trying to commit suicide so cole felt that Peter should come to the island because if Cole didn't change than he would not want Peter there. Than Cole tried and tried again to get Peter to forgive him but it wouldn't work. Than they had a moment when Peter was trying to beat up Cole they saw the spirit bear. Than from their Peter and Cole was taught how to forgive

But after Cole went to the island and nearly died he realized he made a big mistake. Then when Cole had another chance on the island he didn't want to screw it up. He even wanted to meet Peter Driscal again and make things right by teaching him the ways to calm himself and relaxed. When Peter was on the island for a bit he started to do things to Cole that usually would've set him off and beat him up but Cole had patients with Peter and Peter started to get better and actually carve a spirit bear in the totem pole. Cole also forgave his father who had beaten up Cole for a long, but Cole soon realized that his father was beaten by his father so his father was just scared and didn't know what to do. The reason I think that's the theme because Garvey and Edwin never gave up on cole, and they kept trying to help him. Another part of the story that supports this is when coles lying helplessly on the ground, and he doesn't let himself fall into the light(aka die).
