Nowadays, because of the high population of the planet, more crops and food is needed to sustain our current population. As a result, with the help of science humans are able to genetically modify crops in order to create healthier, more rich in nutrients and a bigger amount of them. Those genetically modified crops have an acronym that is mostly used to refer to them, GMO. The literal definition of a GMO is is an organism which its genome has been altered throughout bioengineering so its DNA has elements that normally wouldn't be there. The advantage of having GMO is that a fruit would theoretically be more resilient to harsher environmental conditions or predators.

One of this genetically modified plants are tomatoes. Tomatoes where the first plant that was genetically modified and was allowed to be mass produced and soled. People have wanted to change the DNA of tomatoes for various reasons like be resistant to some bacteria that are threatening for the crops or to have a longer life spam. The way that we are able to engineer the DNA of tomatoes is by injecting a bacteria called Agrobacterium tumefaciens. That bacteria is able to take a part of the DNA of some fruits and replace it with his. When this technique is used to alter the DNA of a seed it applies primarily to female reproductive cells, allowing the plants to pass it to the next generation.

“Gmo.” Dictionary.com, Dictionary.com, www.dictionary.com/browse/gmo.

McDivitt, Paul. “Gmo.” Dictionary.com, Dictionary.com, 11 Oct. 2017, www.dictionary.com/browse/gmo.

Thomas, Michael. “How Do You Actually Make a GM Tomato?” Exposing The Truth, Exploring The Truth Ltd., 5 Sept. 2015, www.exposingtruth.com/how-do-you-actually-make-a-gm-tomato/.

Genetically modified crops are able to help a big variety of people. Firstly they are able to help farmers by needing less food and less space to grow. And, by needing less space the crops are able to help maintain the surrounding habitat of farms by not expecting from farmers to expand their agricultural area to respond to the high demand of food that is needed now days. GMOs also benefits the consumer since farmers use less chemicals to keep the fruit from getting eaten by parasites and also help it have more healthy nutrients, all of the above according to Mosanto.

“Benefits of GMOs and Biotechnology.” Monsanto, monsanto.com/innovations/biotech-gmos/.

Considering that GMO are the dominant nutrients in the market, with 70% of all food in grocery stores being GMO, people should know what they consume in daily. Considering the possibilities of the creation of GMO people should know what they contain in order to avoid health risks. For example, according to small footprint family, GMO soy and corn each contain two new proteins with allergenic properties and claims that Bt-toxin produced in GM plants is thousands of times more concentrated than natural Bt spray used in agriculture to get read of pests. Considering the controversy in whether people should consume or not GMO, people should be informed so they can make the division of whether to trust GMOs or not.

Gifford, Dawn. “What Is a GMO and Why Should You Care?” Small Footprint Family, Small Footprint Family, 19 Jan. 2018, www.smallfootprintfamily.com/why-label-genetically-modified-foods.

With the entry of the first GM animal, the scientist are pretty positive that more GM animals with disease resistant traits and extraordinary growth time will soon enter the market. The future problem with GM that scientist were able to identify was that since crops are getting more resilient to pests then so will pests to the new technologies. As a result, GM food will be needed to be genetically modified again in order to be resilient to diseases and through that entering a never ending cycle with the pests.

Nesbit, Rebecca. “The Future of GMO Food.” Scientific American Blog Network, SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, A DIVISION OF NATURE AMERICA, INC., 5 Sept. 2017, blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/the-future-of-gmo-food/.

By changing the DNA of different crops, there might be some unexpected results in the ecosystem. One of the effects of making the tomatoes more resilient to pests, is the improvement of the of the surrounding ecosystem. In order to avoid destruction of the crops by bacteria they would spray the crops with different kinds of chemicals like copper-based pesticides, that according to genetic literacy project some farmers do up to 88 times per year. Because of the frequent use of chemicals in order to keep crops alive, crop fields tend to have an adverse effect on surrounding soil, water sources, but also biodiversity. By using genetically modified crops to create a food source, we also keep the soil and the water surrounding crop fields healthier. That could not seem like that much of land covered, but according to the national academy of sciences engineering and medicine, with almost 50 percent of the land in the US right now used for agriculture, using GMO tomatoes and other crops could significantly help protect the ecosystem.

The two main factors that are able to bring an economical benefit in to the farmers are technologies that mainly protect crops by making them resistant to parasites. The two leading technologies are Herbicide tolerant (HT) crops and insect resistant (IR) crops. Because of this, farmers have seen a significant increase in yields because of reduced pest infestations. The countries economy that GM mostly effect is developing countries, because they tend to have a bigger interest per dollar that they invest in GMO, according to genetic literacy project. Because of the higher and faster production rate, GMO where able to create benefits that reached $150 billion since the crops were first planted and have greatly benefited economies of developing countries in South and Latin America, Africa and Asia.

1st paragraph
“Read ‘The Impact of Genetically Engineered Crops on Farm Sustainability in the United States’ at NAP.edu.” National Academies Press: OpenBook, National Academy of Sciences, www.nap.edu/read/12804/chapter/4.

McDivitt, Paul. “Disease-Resistant GMO Tomato That Could Eliminate Need for Copper Pesticides Blocked by Public Fears.” Genetic Literacy Project, Genetic Literacy Project, 12 Jan. 2018, geneticliteracyproject.org/2017/10/11/green-technology-disease-resistant-gmo-tomato-eliminate-need-copper-pesticides-double-yields-blocked-public-fears/.

2nd paragraph
Staropoli, Nicholas. “Are There Environmental and Economic Benefits to GMO Crops?
