The UNCRC provides moral guidances for me as a teacher, directing me to create inclusive environments that value all children’s unique identities and abilities. It encourages me to confront biases by reflecting on my own unconscious biases and strive to cultivate discrimination-free learning environments. By supporting individual differences and recognizing them as strengths, I can create learning activities that provide diverse learning preferences, empowering all children actively participate, contribute, and explore their full potential. Through understanding and applying the principles of the UNCRC, I can develop inclusive ECE programs where every child feels valued and empowered to flourish and succeed.

1. Could you please share any traditions that hold significance for your family?

I am asking this question because it is important for me as a teacher to understand and respect these aspects of a child's family's identity. Each child comes from a unique family with its own traditions, methods of communication, and approaches to learning. By understanding these aspects, I can adjust strategies to effectively support individual needs and learning preferences of each child. Children shape their identities not just by the families’ traditional practice and knowledge passed down through generations but also by the unique experiences, beliefs and values of individual families and communities. Appreciating and incorporating traditions, values, and beliefs of families into the curriculum means respecting diversity (UNICEF, 1990).

How would you describe your child's unique strengths and interests?

I am asking this question because understanding what your child outstanding in and enjoys can help me adjust the learning environment to best support child’s individual needs, and to make learning experiences more engaging and relevant. This sparks curiosity, encourages active involvement, and transforms the learning process into a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone. When educators align activities with a children's interests, it increases their engagement and motivation to participate. Emphasising strengths enables teachers to celebrate unique abilities of all children, regardless of their backgrounds, strengths, capabilities, or any learning differences they might have (Australian Government Department of Education, 2022).

What makes you feel respected and supported by your teachers and friends?

I am asking this question because it can help me understand how children perceive respect and value which can guide me in creating supportive relationships and environments that respect and celebrate each child's unique identity. When teachers understand the behaviors and actions that children perceive as respectful and affirming, this can help them to establish trust, foster open communication, and enhance the exchange of ideas and feedback between educators and students. Fostering an environment where everyone is feeling supported, respected, and valued empowers children to express themselves authentically, which is crucial for the implementation of children’s rights (Correia et al., 2021).

How can we ensure that everyone has a chance to share their ideas and opinions during our group discussions?

I am asking this question because by discussing strategies to ensure fair involvement, teachers empower children to share their thoughts and perspectives, fostering a culture of inclusion where all viewpoints are valued and respected. Children capable of developing their own opinions can express them freely in all matters that concern them. Participation also provides a platform for children from diverse backgrounds to explore their identities fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility (Correia et al., 2021).

Educators are dedicated to their ongoing professional growth, which includes participating in collaborative learning experiences aimed at developing an understanding of bias and promoting positive attitudes toward diversity and inclusion. By seeking input from colleagues, I can ensure that professional development initiatives are tailored to meet the needs and priorities of the service community, fostering a continuous journey of growth, and learning in anti-bias practice.

2. How can we collaborate to create an environment that embraces anti-bias practices and promotes equity and inclusion for all children?

I am asking this question because sometimes educators may unknowingly demonstrate bias, as they may not always recognise their own biases. Recognising bias and addressing inequality is an ongoing process of continuous exploration and challenges. It is important to foster an environment where differing opinions are accepted and crucial to integrate anti-bias principles across all aspects of early childhood education (Good Run Solutions, 2010). Through collaborative efforts, all educators as a team can put in use their combined knowledge and dedication to establish an environment where anti-bias education becomes an integral part of daily routines, benefiting every child and nurturing a feeling of inclusivity.

We are living in a diverse world, and diversity is a fundamental aspect that shapes our communities. Inclusion is about being part of and actively engaging in a diverse community, fostering an atmosphere where every child can join in and thrive. Accepting diversity is essential for effective inclusive practice (Early Childhood Australia, 2014). Inclusive practice starts with recognition that everyone is unique, and with fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and included. I believe that every person, regardless of their background, identity, or abilities, deserves to be treated equally, with respect and kindness.

Inclusive practice is not one person’s journey. It requires collaboration and teamwork at all levels. Strong partnerships with families are vital to understanding a child's unique needs and learning preferences. By fostering open communication and collaboration with families, I can ensure a holistic approach to supporting each child's development.

The Early Years Learning Framework states that educators consider inclusive principles in children's education by establishing respectful relationships, fostering partnerships, integrating Indigenous perspectives, ensuring equity, inclusion, valuing diversity, and working effectively as a team (Australian Government Department of Education, 2022).

I believe that building educational environments where every child has the opportunity to express their thoughts and emotions is vitally important. Empowering children by giving them chances to express their opinions and have those opinions taken seriously, actively listening to, and respecting the perspectives and opinions of families, ensuring that their input is acknowledged and implemented should be in every teacher’s day-to-day practice (King, 2015).

It is crucial to acknowledge the importance of children's rights to be heard and to be able to express their own opinions freely, involving them in decisions that impact children’s lives (UNICEF, 1990). This principle aligns with inclusive approaches that value and respect the perspectives and agencies of all children, regardless of backgrounds. Children have voices and they want others to listen to them. ‘Listening means being open to differences and recognizing the value of another’s point of view’ (Rinaldi, 2011, p.236). When I use deep listening to hear children, I can see that children are active participants in shaping their learning experiences. By providing open-ended activities, allowing children to select their learning materials, and creating spaces for them to express their ideas through play, I am trying to empower children through inclusive practice encouraging them to lead their own learning processes.

I strongly believe that every child thrives in an inclusive environment and inclusive practice is the way to remove barriers, support wellbeing and positive outcomes for children in all their diversities.
