In addition, they suffered from terrible abuse. The last negative effect were terrible living conditions.

Residential schools robbed indigenous children of their culture. They had their hair cut , had to wear uniforms and were not allowed to speak their language. Also, they were not allowed to speak with their siblings or learn about their culture. These children were forced  to convert to Christianity. They were not allowed to use their given name but had a number given to them. These are some of the ways they were robbed of their culture.

These children suffered through terrible abuse. There were tortured, they were emotionaly and sexually abused .They had to work at the schools and were not paid. An example of the abuse was a little boy who had to sit in the dark from 7am until 10 pm at night with no water and no food.

The living conditions were terrible. The food was not healthy, there were many diseases like the Spanish flu. There rooms were cold in the winter and extremely warm in the summer and their teachers were very mean to the children. Over 3000 children past away in the residential schools.
