The ongoing pandemic and quarantine regulations in the Philippines has caused many issues in regard to education as the government pushes for a distance learning approach. This greatly affected thousands of students and their families who are struggling to make ends meet even without additional expenses like gadgets and internet data need for academic purposes. With the numerous testimonies and appeals on social media sites by young Filipinos of their hardships and troubles because of the great divide in terms of access to resources, numerous efforts and fundraisers were started to help those in need. One example would be MovePH's #PisoParaSaLaptop initiative which was centered on funding the gadgets needed by several students. Some of their stories are featured in the article below. Projects like this are our way to extend a hand to those who are at a disadvantage because of COVID-19. The goal here is that no one gets left behind; no matter what age or social class.

Due to the pandemic, UAAP teams are now left with online training to stay fit. With this being said, there were a few members of our coaching staff that have been let go knowing that their main task/job became unnecessary given the new set-up (kitman, equipment man, physical therapists, etc.) A lot of these coaches have been with the team for more than 10 years now and majority of them relied on what they were making with the team and school.

The Football community composed of old players, current players, their families, and fans all came together to raise funds for these coaches especially that there were really struggling. We called the group “One Big Fund!” and was able to raise more than 200k. God’s grace was truly seen in this structure as to how we became more than just players or athletes. We went beyond what was expected from us to help our fellow team family.

This initiative aims to ease the burden brought by Covid-19 upon jeepney drivers and their families, by raising funds from donations and gathering recommendations for new jobs.

It was started by one of my friends (and her friends) who have been in contact with jeepney drivers in Katipunan even after thesis (I think they were the key community in the thesis). It's really inspiring because when she posted about this, she mentioned her conversations with the kuyas and stories of how they started small businesses (like selling BBQ) with the initial donations. It reminded me that we don't need to be politicians/CEOs/celebrities to establish our own structures of grace :)

Students are intentional about asking for help to raise funds for devices and internet connection so that they could continue to learn.

The posts that I saw that responded to these requests were not from one specific community but different people from different backgrounds. I know of one person who, instead of asking for gifts for that person's own birthday, the person directed those efforts to supporting these students. It goes to show that no matter where we are in life, we have the choice to help others in any way that we can.

Apart from sending goods and monetary donations, Philippine Astronomical Society Inc. (PAS) members offered their homes to victims of the typhoons. Since the main offices were closed, volunteers offered to hold the donations (canned goods, blankets, hygiene kits, water bottles, etc.) in their own houses while they were still sorting out the distribution packages. Alongside the struggles of the pandemic, there were also communities that were hit by typhoons, specifically Rolly and Ulysses. Houses of families got destroyed and many lost belongings. In response, the organization's Bangon Luzon drive, in partnership with the Office of the Vice President, has distributed boxes of food items in communities in Albay. The aftermath of Ulysses resulted in hundreds of victims and homes lost. Usually, after such a typhoon, it's easy to go to the nearest relief operations center and volunteer but due to covid, protocols and restrictions had to be followed. Instead of the usual number of 50-100 volunteers, the number dropped down to 5-10. Organizations such one lead by my sister-in-law called project proverbs was surprised by the amount of donations they were able to collect, which was able to help various communities around the metro. Waves For Water Philippines’ Help the Helpers Campaign is for the benefit of non-medical frontliners—farmers, fishermen, market vendors, maintenance and sanitation personnel, and other key workers from underserved communities throughout the Philippines.

With clean water and good hygiene still remaining to be the primary mode of prevention for COVID-19, the goal is to help provide three basic needs—clean water systems + jerry cans for storage, hygiene kits, and food packs. A water bill subsidy initiative has also been added to allow families to allocate limited resources into buying the basic needs such as food and medicine.

They simply need to sign up and they can get a spot to talk with a professional from the institution. Suffering comes in all forms and that includes one's mental health. The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us and is not treating everyone kindly. Hence, any form of help and guidance would be truly useful. I am so happy that the Ateneo Bulatao Center has opened their hearts by providing free sessions especially since taking care of one's mental health is a cost not everyone accounts for.

Back during the beginning of the pandemic last April 2020, my friends and I who were stuck in other countries launched a fundraiser that aimed to help displaced workers around the country. We were able to raise over $700 or 35,000 PHP that we donated to street vendors, service workers, construction workers, and garbage collectors in Manila.

My girlfriend and I, along with a few others, were able to make and donate almost 1,000 face shields during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was this time when there was an apparent lack of protective gear for our medical frontliners; and so, we decided to take immediate action.

The farming industry and our very own farmers were one of the most heavily affected sectors due to the pandemic. Farmers who already experience difficulty due to preference for imported goods and weather conditions that affect the crops, were further affected by the pandemic that limited their ability to transport their produce to be sold. AGREA Foundation helped address this issue by establishing the Move Food Initiative, which connected 28,000 farmers in the Philippines with sustainable markets where they could supply their produce. They coordinated with different departments such as the Ateneo Food Safety and Nutrition Council and the LS Physical Education department to have a comprehensive view of the challenges faced and how to best meet the demands of the community through sustainable means.

Ana Patricia “Patreng” Non of the UP College of Fine Arts has become a household name—and if not her name itself, then the community pantry that she set up in Maginhawa Street, Diliman, during the height of the COVID lockdowns, which sparked a wave of similar free-food-for-the-poor projects across the country, with as many as 6,700 community pantries at one point nationwide. "Filipinos were quick to organize and adapt to the pandemic, with local groups, many of them youth-led, stepping up to address the different challenges the pandemic caused for Filipino communities.

Last August 6, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the Philippines and led the handover of U.S. government-donated medical supplies, laboratory equipment, testing and hygiene kits for local hospitals and medical facilities.

During his visit, Secretary Blinken also met with representatives from eight civil society organizations (CSO) to learn how these groups are making a difference for Filipinos who have been impacted by the pandemic."
