As a student development professional, Mrs. Williams and I discussed how the mental health epidemic directly affects students success in and out of the classroom. Without the necessary tools and resources to aid this population of students we are doing them a disservice.
Some best practices she recommended working with students in the student support services program was
-Building rapport with all your students
-Checking in on them one-on-one periodically pertaining to their grades, but also to their over all well-being
-Staying up to date on campus resources readily available to them
An area within the college she works at and many nation-wide that has an emerging issue is the lack of professionals certified to address these issues. She discussed with me how many schools are not able to address all students mental health needs because their aren't enough trained professionals. This greatly impacts students progress and success in higher education. Due to this, it is important to keep a close eye on students you know may be struggling with mental health issues and if they are getting the services they need. However, this can also be difficult considering they would have to disclose this information on their own.
