The doctors that were assigned to deal with patients infected by the plague wore certain attire to avoid being infected. Their uniforms consisted of wearing a long gown coated in wax, full-length boots, leather gloves, and a hat. They also wore a mask with a long beak, and they filled it with herbs and spices. This would purify the air they inhaled when they dealt with sick people. They also carried a wooden stick to keep the ill away.
https://www.historyonthenet.com/the-stuarts-the-plague-doctor

At first, many believed rats to be the sole cause of the plague. Later on, it was discovered that rats did not play a big part as originally thought. Microscopic bacteria called Yersinia Pestis, which live on fleas, were the cause of the plague. The fleas that this bacteria lived on would feed on infected animals, and this increased the fatality of the Black Death.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/16/health/black-death-plague-spread-by-humans-intl/index.html

There were many coping mechanisms that people of the medieval ages used to cope with the intensity. Many lashed out at neighbors, and others believed they had to cleanse their cities and towns of the sinners causing God to punish them. Many people fled in fear, and thousands of Jews were killed between 1348-1349. There were also flagellants where upper-class men went from town to town either beating themselves or others with leather straps studded with sharp items.
https://www.history.com/topics/middle-ages/black-death
