Americans valued their religion (their God and "His" beliefs). Being a hard-worker, self-reliant, and many other characteristics where being valued during this time. this meant that the "American Dream" would be pretty easy to achieve with the attitudes that were already built into the people. They already had a go-get-em way of working spirit in the people.

The Puritans of Salem, Massachusetts were normal people with the exception of having a strong belief that the devil is real and in everyday life. Puritans wanted a utopia, but were trying to get one by rebelling occasionally. Puritans feared God's wrath and figured Satan was out and about in their lives and streets. This shaped their American Dream in the way that they were trying to get rid of Satan and to them if it meant people would be killed and imprisoned for life, then they were willing to do so. They all still had the main values of an American including hard-working-and self-reliant, their religion also meant a lot to them.
